Hi, I'm an Audiologist.

Noise in your ear is called tinnitus. No one knows what causes it, as no current technology is able to measure it. For some people it is ringing, for others hissing, some say it's like the ocean.

Some people, like you and myself, hear it all their lives and it is benign. In others it occurs as a result of some sort of ear disorder, and sometimes can be a symptom of a serious medical condition (especially if it is mostly in one ear).

We hear tinnitus the most when there is minimal outside sound to drown it out or mask it. That is why many people keep noise sources on continuously, as one other responder mentions. I run a fan at night both to mask my tinnitus, but also to drown out other noises, as my hearing is very good and I am a light sleeper.

Tinnitus also becomes louder when we have hearing loss of any kind. So if you experience a change in your hearing or the tinnitus, a audiologic and otologic examinations are recommended.

Hearing a buzzing or ringing in the ears can be indicative of a persistent medical condition such as Meniere's disease (endolymphatic hydrops) or tinnitis. It can also manifest as a result of head injury, recent viral illness, stress, or the use of alcohol or other disassociative drugs. Moreover, this can be (in very rare cases) a sign of schizophrenia; the diagnosis is made more likely by the mention that you hear voices when you should hear none. However, the first thing to rule out is natural environmental sound. Be _absolutely_ certain that this is not due to a radio, television or neighboring residents. If you are positive you are hearing these things in total seclusion and silence, consult a doctor immediately. Your condition could be very serious. It doesn't mean you are "crazy"... but it does suggest that further medical investigation by a qualified health professional is merited. Getting the proper medical treatment is likely to alleviate your symptoms and allow you to lead a regular, unperturbed existence.

Ive recently started getting static in my left ear durin the past two months. I first noticed it while listening to music in my car. And its only when in listening to my music rather loud. I thought one of my speakers had a bad connection but after a whike I noticed it was just my left ear having this problem and it only happens when the music is too high. However, I have noticed that I get alot of earwax frequently and as im laying in bed with my head on its side, ear to the pillow, I will lose my hearing temporarily in the middle of the night. Im assumin its from having pressure on that ear. I really dont know. I do use cotton swabs to clean my ears and I happen to swab a little deep in there. Since my swabbing is painless I figure im not damaging anything. But im probaly pushing earwax into my eardrum hence why theres static in my hearing intermittently. I have been dizzy and nauseous also. I may go into the doctor soon if these symptoms dont subside.

I've heard that sound forever, mostly prominent when there is nothing else to hear around. It gives me the feeling of living in a movie also but thats a different story. This is probably why I am so OBSESSED with music I love every aspect of it. Get into music and you will never hear it again because you will have the radio in your car, your room, and if you are near to neither, get an iPod. I hear music 24/7(leave it on when I sleep).

It just happened to me recently. Yesterday i was watching tv when all of a sudden i lost my hearing in my left ear. all i was able to hear out of it was some mumbling when people talked along with static. sounds like a bad speaker. then i noticed it getting worse around loud noises. today i got some of my hearing back and the static is not as worse and is intermittent...now when it is quiet it sounds like the ocean...seeing doctor tomorrow...

You should read Thomas Coleman's book "Tinnitus Miracle" ( also available in electronic format here: http://www.tinnituscureforever.com ). Almost everyone who has used Tinnitus Miracle has reported success in treatment.

Some people use drugs and get surgeries done to get rid of the annoying constant ringing in their ears. But these are only temporary solutions to a grave problem, which needs to be eradicated from the very root of it. The disease has a number of root causes, but only when each has been dealt with the disease gets fully cured. Otherwise, it keeps reappearing. Drugs and herbal medicines can cure only the root causes, which is why they cannot be completely relied upon.

Not one person mentioned HAARP. do a little research on the subject. You will find that there is intact a reason why you are hearing static.
