I'm thinking society will have to put up with this nonsense for probably another 200 years or so before the last of them come to their senses or are just killed off for being so damn retarded. I know that in western europe and in other developed countries of the world like japan and korea religion is waning and is more or less dead because they're a lot more educated and cultured (basically not morons). I guess when there is no more 'third world' religion will be practically dead. Thank God. no pun intended

Are you kidding? Have you seen how our society has been acting over Political Parties??? And mixing that with their own Religions? In 200 yrs Religion will still be around. But I think it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. And Mainstream is waning, but look at all the other Religions that are coming up to take their place. Wicca started in the 40's in Europe... it's not a recognized Religion. In just a little over 60 yrs time look at how it has grown. I'm not Wiccan, BTW... pointing out the new Religions coming out and how quick they grow.

Sadly, I expect religion will be around to encourage people to have "holy wars" and kill, maim and torture each other because "my god is better than your god" - and such cretinous logic.

It is strange, we tend to expect children around 8-10 years old to be sussing things like Father Christmas out - and yet with even LESS proof (as in meaning proof not twaddle from a work of fiction), many adults carry on the whole religious thing despite ZERO evidence of ANYTHING - right until they pop their clogs.

I can understand that it can bring comfort to the lonely / sad / bereaved - and for that, the illusion has some merit, when we have to take it seriously though - and people are killed in its name, then it really is high time to try and "wind it up".

Alas, I wouldn't hold your breath.

The US, which is hardly 3rd world, is still a hotbed of religion. Buddha's metaphor is that religion is a raft, a useful tool for crossing a river, but it would be silly to keep carrying it once you're on the other side. Obviously a lot of people are still holding on to the raft. Why? What is the defect in even modern education and culture that keeps them still needing it?

Religion started when man came down out of the trees, rubbed two sticks together and Said let there be light and created man made fire some six million years ago. What makes you think we will get rid of it in a mere two hundred more year? No friend we are stuck with religion until the last two men on Earth fight it out. xx

Well, I don't think religion will end. In fact, with the way quantum physics is truning out, it may just increase.

Much that verifies spirituality, to a point, is hushed by the scientific community. Read "Many Lives, Many Masters". Read the authors he quotes. Past life experience is substantial proof that there is something after death. It certainly isn't addressed by the atheistic community. Probably, it's simply dismissed out-of-hand. It seems anything that authenticates what atheists disbelieve is simply dismissed.

when spirituality is separated as LIVING a way of life, vs religion's believing and teaching what they WISH to be

your beliefs shape your life, your actions speak of your spirituality

your choices should stem from hopes, facts, beliefs and your actions should reflect your beliefs and experiences

other religions have tried to end others, just to have thier own books burned by the next barbaric monotheistic society come and try and abuse others yet remain pious and teach the double standards

for me, religion has ended and I have a new life already

it's a personal choice, be that change you wish to see in others

Fish food...

I'll give religion another 20 years... As well as the human race.

we'll kill eachother off before anything develops that could possibly be good for us all. Nature will whip Her lavish tail, and there we go.

Religion will end when its adherents get a true glimpse of God. He isn't a thousand different dogmas all trying to say their way is "the way".

It won't be technology or scientific progress that ends religion, it'll be education. So that depends on when we get our priorities straight as a people.
