Have you painted anything that has sold previously? If not don't count on making money by painting .There's not too many pros who could say that painting is a sure fire money maker. If you paint a bunch of pictures and they don't sell, can you afford to lose the money? If not, I suggest you find a part time job.I 'm not trying to be mean I'm just trying to provide a reality check that's all.I've known a lot of people who have been there including myself.I never paint something "because it will sell" to me that is a sure fire way to produce a piece of crap. But to answer your question It's mostly how you paint something that makes it interesting. What subject do you find interesting? If you don't find the subject interesting no one else will either.Good luck!

Hi:

This is a difficult question - it is usually pretty difficult to get to a point where you can make any money from creating paintings, if ever.

However, you might try wildlife painting, too. If you're images are good, you might also be able to create prints from them to sell, too. Check out the website guru.com - basic membership is free there and you might get some contacts for buying some of your artwork or you might be able to get an art project to do, or at least get some ideas of what various people might be looking for.

Check out the online artist community wetcanvas. There are currently 95,000+ worldwide members there and basic membership is free. It is a fantastic site.

Usually people in general want pictures of pleasant ideas; a landscape of the seashore, a landmark.. Personally, i tend to buy art that relates to friends' interests, and send it as gifts. Therefore, extend your range by painting different activities; a ballet dancer, a soccer player, maybe a cafe exterior. Go towards your strengths, which type of painting do you excel in? I'd rather have a spectacular oil painting than a second-rate watercolor, no matter how much i prefer the watercolor over oil. Also, consider the subject matter; you have less control with water color, but it makes beautiful landscapes.

Good luck!

Art is subjective, and there are no guarantees to success. Painting what you feel most passionate about, what you love, and what inspires you will hopefully create a strong piece that will connect with an audience. As a portrait artist and photographer, I find people compelling, and my view of this personal interest makes for my most popular pieces.

That would make decorating a lot of fun - pot luck on the colourscheme you land up with! Why not alcohol as well, we all know the health risks with that. That could be all white packing as well. While we are at it, make aerosol cans all white too. And glues. And everything else that could remotely be hazardous to our health. Shopping trips would be more exciting if that happened - we would be constantly surprised at the random products we bought!

I have a painting in my room that my cousin made for me and it is beautiful. It's a painting of a waterfall in the fall with some rocks, trees, and flowers and a lot of color. Personally, I think, that paintings of landscapes such as waterfalls, mountains, flowers, and other outdoor images with lots of color will sell best.

Every person is looking for something they can relate to; something that makes their own life seem worthwhile or meaningful. And yet something that can be understood differently in different contexts. Usually when i look at a painting i look at the colours to see what would look the nicest on my wall

You should first pose yourself as an artist, before thinking "sell".
To answer your question : Acrylic (on paper or on frame) and Oil (on wood, on frame) are the most popular and the most valuable choice for your purpose.
The final choice between those is yours, it is part of what makes "you" as an artist.

So take your brushes -or your painting knife- and go go go!
Good luck and happy new year.
