carolinat..., That's called common sense.
You are all saying NO, English should be the language, when that is what I'm saying. Please read the question carefully, and if you need a dictionary, grab one.

Yes it does create diversity. The US is a blend of many different cultures, which is one of its characteristics that makes it unique. Many languages brings different people together, especially those who have difficulty learning English. Until they can successfully learn English, which definitely does not occur overnight, they should have some help so they will not be isolated from the rest of the country.

It's not language that creates diversity, there are other cultural factors and beliefs that create diversity. There's nothing wrong with learning another language, but i do believe that people that enter a different country should make the effort to learn the language and not the other way around.
I'm not saying that people should just give up their culture and customs, but they should respect the one already existing which is the one they're immigrating to. This will only enrich them.

The promotion of multiple languages within a nation is a promotion of division. A country without a unifying language will fall apart because it lacks an identity. We are all free to speak whatever languages we want amongst our friends and family. But as far as the United States goes, English is the language. Isn't it interesting how many foreign countries teach their children to speak English?
Simple yes or no?, please.

Yes, I believe it does promote diversity and is a strength, but it's never simple . . . the caveat being it should include a multitude of languages and never instead of or at the expense of a full knowledge of English.
People in Europe often have a working knowledge of several languages. It's a real brain skill and asset in business and travel. American kids are increasingly at a loss here. Those of us from old immigrant waves have all lost our cultural heritages though as well as our languages and now, we're faced with new immigrants who refuse to "lose" theirs. Instead of being bitter or acquiescing to learning theirs we should usher in a new renaissance of languages in this country. Rosetta Stone should be in our schools and kids should be given a choice.
I wish I could have learned Gaelic or Italian back then.

It's NOT a simple yes or no answer. Promoting mutiple languages creates confusion and in at least one case that I know of, a fatal motor vehicle accident because a truck driver could not read the road signs.
It also promotes divisiveness and conflict.

No you are wrong. We have plenty of diversity. Our language is English learn it or leave. 9Somalians died of carbon monoxide poisoning because they could not read English telling them they could not burn a charcoal grill in a small confined area. A Hispanic grandmother couldn't read English when she placed her grandchild on a tray to be x rayed at an airport. We cannot have 30 languages on a sign that is for public safety. Learn English and communicate with Americans.

Diverse languages make for poor communication. Poor Communication makes for misunderstanding. If everyone speaks english the only barriers to unity will be peoples bad attitude.

SOME WOULD SAY THAT IT PROMOTES KNOWLEDGE OF ANOTHER LANGUAGE, OTHERS SAY EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK ENGLISH. MY GRAND PARENTS WANTED MY PARENTS TO SPEAK ONLY ENGLISH, AS DID MY PARENTS DID TO ME. NOW IT SEEMS THAT IT HAS COME FULL CIRCLE. MY GRANDSON IS LEARNING TWO ADDITIONAL LANGUAGES IN KINDERGARTEN.
