What has happened to proper etiquette when we use messenger, email, text messaging? Learn how to spell and respect each other. Am I the only one who notices a trend of laziness, it seems we shortcut so much we have lost the ability to even communicate any more. Respect is an action, not just a word

I've often wondered the same thing myself. There is a total lack of respect and etiquette as you mention, and it is deplorable. As for proper grammar, spelling and punctuation -- those things appear to be a lost art. And indeed, it is a loss of communication. I don't have any solutions. All I know is that many of the responses on here are from younger people, those who will be the generation of tomorrow. I shudder to think of how the business world will flounder when such illiteracy is rampant. Perhaps educational standards have really slipped since I went to school. We had to learn proper usage of the English language, or we would have never graduated. Some of the writings on here seem to be arrested at about the third or fourth grade level. It's a very sad commentary on today's society. Thanks for noticing and sharing my views.

It's quite simple. The Internet has bred a culture of both communication and convenience. Ease of the abbreviations and cost of SMS Text Messaging have caused a need to shorten language to more phonetic jargon. We have not so much lost our ability to communicate as we have gained a new way to do so to keep up with our high efficiency, high demand, high pace world.

One could quite tell you that you are incredibly hypocritical by not using proper grammar and punctuation in your "question".

This is a pet peeve of mine. It's especially irritating when someone is writing a post and apologizes for their poor spelling. They know it's bad but spend more time typing their excuse than it would take to use spellcheck. Clear communication is important. What is the workplace going to do with all of these people who do not know how to write properly? Will they send these jobs overseas to people whose knowledge of the English language (even American English) is better than ours?

I only use the abbreviations when I chat online. I use proper grammar whenever I type emails or write stuff down or on this site like right now. :) It's really annoying when people constantly use abbreviations for everything. I used to be guilty of it! lol
