I am gettin my Dobermans ears cropped next Friday. Why do we have to leave her there over night and how hard is it to get their ears to stand. I have heard anywhere from a month to a year. Only serious answers, none of this "Its inhumane and cruelty to animals" if it was cruelty, you wouldnt be able to get it done.

What is the difference from gettin your dogs ears done and gettin plastic surgery? NOTHING! If you go and look and pictures of Dobermans, almost every one have their ears cropped. So everybody that thinks its inhumane or cruel, go tell that to everybody else who has their dogs ears cropped. My doberman is my baby, i spend all day with her, spoil her rotten, and i woulddo anything in the world for her, so im am not cruel to be doing this to my dog. I think of her as a person, not a dog. So dont call me cruel for doin this to her. If i thought she was goin to hate me for this, then I wouldnt do it. She will be 10 weeks old monday, she is just a puppy. This isnt goin to affect how she feels about me. If i was a doberman, i would WANT my owner to get my ears cropped!!!!!

Evilstrawberry-if you would have read that whole article, which I did, it say that(and I quote) "ear cropping is no different philosophically or ethically than any elective surgery such as spaying and neutering or removing protruding dew claws". So I bet, everybody who has an animal, has had its dewclaws removed and probably had it spayed or neutered. That causes pain to the animal and they dont have a "say so" in that. So that would make you cruel too

Your dog should do fine as long as your vet is experienced at cropping. Make sure you return for all follow up appointments. The only time your dog will show any sign of pain is when the vet changes the wrapping the first couple of times. Don't let the dog fool with the wraps or get them wet. I have had many dogs (Dobermans) ears cropped and every set of ears stood nicely. The vet is having you leave her there over night is probably due to the anesthetic. I was wondering how old your baby is? I hope she is around 12 weeks.I wish you all the best and if the vet doing this job is very reputable she will be fine.

Ear cropping is a serious surgery that requires cutting nerves. Along with the effects of anethesia and the procedure itself, is why your dog will be kept overnight.
Ear cropping is done on a select group of dogs for cosmetic purposes only. Boxers, Great Danes, Doberman Pincers, Miniature Pincers, Schnauzers, Bouviers des Flandres, and American Pit Bull Terriers, are among the more common breeds in which ear cropping is performed.
Usually recommended to be done around the age of 10-14 weeks old, the procedure requires full anesthesia. The ears are then cut in a way that instead of flopping down to the side of the head, they stand erect on the head to a point.
In most breeds however, the ears require a period of bandaging and support splinting in order to get them to stand. This is essential for the ears to ultimately stand, and if not done sufficiently, the ears may not stand erect. The longer the ear length is, the more time required for splinting is necessary.
Although breeders can perform this procedure, it is best left to a licensed veterinarian, who has appropriate anesthetics. Puppies who undergo this procedure expect at least a few weeks of painful, sensitive ears. Unfortunately, the splinting of the ears is necessary especially during the early stages of healing, which adds to their discomfort. Unless you're planning to show your dog in conformation classes, ear cropping is un-necessary, and therefore becomes personal preference.
Be sure and understand all that is involved not only with the surgery, but afterwards during the splinting procedures. Know what to expect, and when to seek help during this time from your veterinarian, to avoid ears that ultimately won't stand.
The Association of Veterinary Medicine (AVMA), has recently made a statement regarding cosmetic ear cropping and tail docking in the dog. Essentially, and ultimately the AVMA would like to see this type of cosmetic procedure discontinued for cosmetic purposes only.
Find all you can on ear cropping because once you have it done there is no turning back. And please, don't assume that just because we are in the USA does not mean that cruelty is not allowed. Remember, ear cropping was started at a time when animals were considered dumb animals and nothing was considered cruel. It takes a long time to correct wrongs when it comes to human opinion.
Get all the facts first, as you are doing now, so that you make the best decision for your dog.

It can be extremely difficult to get the ears to stand after a crop..sometimes they never stand no matter how long they are taped. I hope you have a very experienced vet doing the cropping..cropping is NOT taught in vet schools and most vets don't do cropping..of those that do many don't know how to do it right and there are many, many botched crops out there. The AVMA * AAHA doesn't condone ear cropping any more...The US is pretty much the only country that still allows cropping to be done.
Also there is no truth to cropped dogs hear better or get less ear infections....working for/with vets for the past 34 years and owning(and showing) traditionally cropped breeds for 30 years I can tell you that cropped/erect earred dogs get just as many ear infections as flop earred dogs and the hearing is the same cropped or natural.
Actually cropping is a LOT different then spay/neuter and even dewclaw removal. Cropping is purely cosmetic and does nothing to improve health or prevent health issues or injury. Spay/neuter not only prevents unwanted pregnancy it also eliminates reproductive cancers and a very serious often fatal uterine infection, pyometria, testicular & prostrate cancers, anal fistulas and dramaticly reduces mammary cancers. Dewclaw removal keeps them from being ripped and torn. Dewclaws that become ripped are very painful and are hard to heal. Dewclaws that are lose catch on things often ripping not only the nail out but the actual digit becomes ripped off/torn as well.
Cropping is no longer needed in the show ring..many dogs of traditionally cropped breeds are being shown natural and are obtaining their championships. There are many Dobermans and Danes out there that aren't cropped. Fewer breeders are cropping now, many are making it optional in their puppies and very few vets crop now. It is a dying "art"

i recently had my pits ears cropped and the vet did a wonderful job. i had alot of faith to the vet that done the procedure. the after care isn't as bad as it is made out to be. let the wound scab over the first 24 hrs to 36 hrs. then apply the cream once or twice daily. let it heal like if you had a cut. let them heal in the first 7 to 10 days then i would begin to worry about the standing. i have heard of the ears standing fine for a few weeks and then one falling. just be ready to tape support the ears. it may happen like that off and on for a while but within the year you should have it right.

It is different to plastic surgery because if you had palstic surgery it would be YOUR CHOICE but a dog as NO CHOICE. You are making it happen and it can not decide whether it wants it done or not.
There are many things you can get don't which are inhumane. In some area you can still gets cats declawed, whcih is a very painful and horrible thing to have done.
How do you know if you would like to have your ears cropped if you were a dog? You're not a dog and I'm betting you've never had plastic surgery so do you have anything to compare it to?
This is a vet who doesn't do ear cropping. Have a read of him.

I guess it's your choice, but really, why do it?

If you want to get your dogs ears cropped by all means GET IT DONE. Frankly I hate the look of a droopy eared Dobe. Don't allow the "Moron League" get to you. They are the same ones in the fashion mags looking for boob jobs, puffy lips and Lipo. There is no need to leave the dog over night. Just let the vet know your experience and it should be okay. Rarely have my dogs spent the night after a procedure.

It depends on the ear leather as to how easy it will be to get it to stand. You shouldn't have to leave the pup over night. I've seen it done and the pup woke up and started throwing his head against the wall and peeing on itself from the pain. It still went home that day. They shouldn't have to keep it unless for some reason the dog needs extra supervision. I hope you got a good vet to do it and will not do a botched job. I hope you know to tell hime the type of crop you want

My 5 year old pit bull had his ears cropped before he was a year old. He stayed overnight. He had no problems. They were standing up at the next vet visit to change the bandages. He never had any pain. His ears look great. Vets know what they are doing during this procedure.

The reason they want her to spend the night is to make sure she is doing good after the surgery, and the standing part could take a month to 6 months,,, also please you get all the instruction down for the proper care after wards cause if you dont take good care of them then you could have one stand properly and then that still flops and also they can and will get infected if not cared for,,, i have Mini Pinchers and all my mini pinchers have nateral standing ears except on and we had his done very early in age so we didnt have a problem with his ears standing at all and it took him 3 months to stand up after the surgery,,, I hope this has helped and Happy New Year,,
