How much does a cocker spaniel female last in heat and how many times does it take for her to get pregnant?

I have two cocker spaniels, one is a male and he's 1 year old and the other one is a female and she's 8 months old, she came in heat (started bleeding) on dec. 18, 2006 and on dec 28, 2006 I seen her and the male dog get locked up for like 10 minutes or so, this was her first time being in heat ever, how much longer should I expect her to be in heat and how many times do they have to get locked up for the female to get pregnant? I really need to know, she's only 8 months old, if she does get pregnant this young, she may not be a good mom. Someone let me know please!

if she went into heat on the 18 of dec, then right now is when she will be in standing for a male,, if she has already tied with your male then there is a good chance she could be already pregnant cause it only takes one time,,, like one of the people answered above me said,, if you are going to breed them then you can take her to the vet and have them give her a shot to end the pregnancy and make sure you keep them apart for another 10 days cause a female goes into heat every 6 months give or take and the heat will last 20 days on the 10th day is when the female is in standing heat for the male to breed with her and you need to wait to breed her untill she is 2 years old cause she is still growing and maturing untill she is 2 years old,,, I hope that this tie didnt take and she isnt pregnant cause it could kill her or like you said she is way to young and not be a good mother,, I hope this has helped and please take her to the vet and get her checked out and keep them apart untill she is out of heat, Happy New Year

Yes, she is much, much too young. Since you were irresponsible enough not to keep them separated or get them spayed and neutered, if you care about this dog at all, get her to the vet to have her spayed and these puppies aborted at the same time!! She not only may not be a good mom, you can do permanent skeletal damage to her! You're obviously not responsible enough to look after a new-born litter either!

Of course she's too young to be a mom.You should have thought of that before you let them breed.It's not too late to take her in for an emergency spay or a mismating shot.I would suggest that if you are going to breed dogs that you learn all there is to know beforehand.You DO have the Internet.Do some research and have both dogs checked at a vet to make sure they are fit to breed-no defects of any kind(progressive retinal atrophy,eye problems,ear problems,brucellosis,etc,and that they are up-to -date on their vaccinations and heartworm preventative).If you are going to breed,please be responsible.

Because literally millions, not thousands, of dogs are euthanized each year because of people who think they are breeders, but are in fact illiterate about breeding.
Please become part of the solution, not part of the problem. Have your dogs fixed ASAP.
Now that I have said it, you need to not be a breeder. The mistake has been made already, but maybe you can become an educated person and learn from your mistakes without causing more harm. Please do so. It will possibly save your dogs life as well as other dogs who need homes in shelters, as well as save you the distress of regretting your decision.
