Larger chicken coup with more chickens, lay more eggs...more eggs, means more chicks...
Because, people in China didn't have TV and computer. After dark, they had nothing to do but sex left...that was only entertainment they had.

Don't feel stupid.. This question baffles many.. It is popularly noted that China population is about 1.6 to 1.8 billion. The real truth however not indicated in census data is that the population is actually closer to 2.5 billion..
What is the staggaring reason for this population boom? Several actually..
1. Better nutrition and Higher Standards of Living. China is very modern these days. Just think about the labels, "Made-in-China" If we're a modern society and we're having China make our things for us, they're getting a peice of the benefit pie.. Everywhere you go in China you can enjoy delicious Chinese food. After Mao's famines, the people of China place extreeme importance on eating well..
2. Sexual Revolution China's "One Child" policy was a serious initiative by the government to reduce and reign in the population. The western media propaganda portrays this initiative as a human rights violation. Were some female children killed? Absolutely, but mostly in Chinas undeveloped "Wild West" areas.. This is changing..
Right now all across China, young couples are shedding their conservative traditions and redifing themselves in modern Chinese terms.. There is simply a sexual revolution going on right now in China that will likely thrust China into a whole new category of populace.. Seven years ago in small town in China where I was living, you would never see a young couple in the park holding hands.. In fact, most young folks did not begin dating until college.. Now adays, you'll see young couple kissing openly and embracing.. driging around in Audis, BMWs, Mercedies.. It is a big contrast from just a few years ago..

Yes, millions and millions perished in wars, famines, natural and man made disasters. But Mao did not become the ultimate dictator without anticipating much of that, and boy O boy did he ever over acheived in the area of replenishing fresh blood.
He commmanded a mass of over half a billion people to, " go forth and multiply " The result was really nothing less than mind baffling and literally breath taking.
Let's just say that there were about 500,000,000 chinese in 1950 and the birth rate is 5% each year.
500,000,000 x 5% = 25,000,000. i.e. 25 million.
That is more than enough to cover ALL the deaths regardless of cause. And as long as it maintained growth, which they did for "decades", the factor compounded into what they are today. The "1 child policy" for the last 2-3 decades merely slows the growth rate. It will probably take another half century or so of this policy to get the procreation machine into full stop and then slowly into reverse mode.

Consider the land mass that makes up China. Some of uninhabitable. It would be 2 to 3 times larger than India which has a billion people. China is estimated at 1.3 billion.
From an agrarian society mainly and during the communist rule. It took warm bodies to keep the machine going. Families with 2,3 or 4 or more children would not be unusual. With the socialistic medicine that would be part of the Communist way. Many of those children survived.
Yes, millions died during the Mao years. Because of the failed programs, floods, earthquakes, etc. The Chinese are a resilient people. The human records date back 67,000 years at least. And their families are the strength behind their growth and resilience.

China is very large for one thing. However, in the country side lots of kids means a better life, the more children the better. Also farmers need sons to help with the labor, if the first child is a girl they must keep trying to get a son. Plus the old people must rely on their son and not on their daughter. This is a old Chinese concept. This is according to the my Chinese colleague sitting next to me here in Shenzhen, China.

'death can't end anything as long as there're always the truth and justice, they kill XiaMinhan, other XiaMinhans will survive'
