I take the shampoo and tiny tiny soaps but I leave the TP and towels alone.

Sure. It's a part of hotel cost you paid. They are good for
your own short term travel later or for guests coming to
your house for a couple nights.
Tipping the maid is a must. But there's no connection with
taking the toiletries or not. They usually don't seen to care
at all.
Toilet paper ... if you're on a road trip and need it for those
unpredictable roadside restrooms. Yes.

Jeez how cheap and low budget do you have to be to help yourself to things you don't even need, especially toiletries and toilet paper?
If you used it then fair enough they will replace it when you leave.
Why not go the whole hog and take the bedsheets, perhaps the towels too - in fact anything that isn't nailed down.

I've never taken toilet paper, but I take home all the toiletries - including little bars of soap (I don't use them, but I take them), nasty tasting mouthwash (Listerine - tastes like a hospital), shoe shine rags and polish (I usually wear sneakers and I wash them in the washing machine - I have no use for shoe polish), I take the sewing kits with the little threads and buttons - I have no idea how to sew, I take the flimsy little combs - I never use them - my hair is too thick to use those cheap combs, they would break. Yes, if they leave if for me, I take it home.

Toiletries like soap, shampoo, lotion yes. If I like them. Some I don't touch.
Never take toilet paper, tissues, stationary, towels, glasses etc.
By the way, tip your housekeepers, they really work hard and they appreicate the $.

Yes, but I save them for the local women's center, no I don't take the T.P., if you can afford a hotel you can buy your own toilet paper, and I always leave a tip for the maid.

No, but I used to be a maid in an upscale hotel and we had a back door where we would put plastic bags full of nice sheets and robes. We would walk by that door on our way home and pick everything up!

Well, it all depends whether you are in need of the toiletries or not. If you do not need the toiletries you should n't feel ambiguous about what to do, simple as that.

I will occassionally snag the lotion if its a brand I like. I am so brand specific when it comes to shampoo and body wash, that I leave that stuff. I also snag the plastic shower cap (they make great bowl covers in the kitchen) and the mending kit.
