The previous verse says that there are those that oppose themselves.
2 Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
These are they who cannot acknowledge the truth because they have opposed themselves by allowing sin into their lives.
1 Timothy 1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
These who have put away a good conscience have made their faith shipwreck.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Satan is allowed to take us captive because of sin and double-mindedness.
Hebrews 11: 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
If sin and double-mindedness have caused our faith to be shipwrecked and separated us from God then what is our hope?
Romans 10: 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Our answer lies in reading and studying the scriptures, and by listening to the preaching of men of God who know the unadulterated bible.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

I am going through some of this right now. I've tried to become a Christian, but I feel myself being attracted back to Native American religious ways. So I guess I am having a struggle with Satan.

I think that means that they are caught in their sins. People can be possessed but they have to agree to it. They can be tricked into agreeing but they will make a conscious choice at some point and it will be their decision to accept possession. Satan can't take over someones freewill. It has to be a choice on the part of the person. And Satan cannot possess anyone, its his lackeys that do that and it takes a lot of the little buggers to do it.

C.S. Lewis (respected Christian and secular writer) expressed it best in his book The Screwtape Letters (I must paraphrase since I do not have it memorized but the basic point is):
We are weakest when we blame external personalities for our shortcomings. Demons are real but insubstantial; they do not take over our bodies but instead they encourage weak thoughts and actions that WE make. Even faithful people have their stronger days and weaker days.
The best you can do is believe in your choices, be true to yourself in your actions, and supportive of those who really want support.
Most importantly learn to forgive others their mistakes and forgive YOURSELF your own so you can honestly try and do better next time.

Yes. If one is not strong in his religion, he is fair prey for the devil. Satan lurks in the hearts of those who are most vulnerable to his possession. Even when you are a Christian, all the temptations put before you are put there by Mephisto himself. Only those who are truly committed to God can overcome those temptations.

Calling the name of Christ Jesus and saying you are a Christian doesn't accomplish anything. We must be born again-repenting of our sins, accepting and believing that Jesus Christ died for our sins, professing this to God, and giving our lives and hearts over for God's renovation and sanctification of us. In the meantime, until this is done, yes, Satan already has us captive.
Now as for losing our safety, God has told us that no one can pluck us out of his hands.
If you are talking about yourself, seek God on this issue. If you are talking about someone else, we are not his/her judge. Pray and put it in God's hands.

Fortunately god and satan do not exist. They are human creations used to explain the world around us, rather than actual physical beings which can actively interfere with your everyday life.
So, in answer to your question, no. You can, however, be held captive by your beliefs, but that is a different question.
