Standard definition can support up to 480i and that's it.You can't make the resolution higher because of the source. To display 1080i your tv must scale the signal from 480 to 1080. You still can use the higher solution if you have the xbox 360 or PS3. Both consoles can display HD up to 1080. To get HD signal you need to have HD cable.

480i and 480p are both part of the ATSC digital television standard, but they are NOT HDTV. That term is reserved for 720p, 1080i or 1080p. Any TV will accept 480i input. Some SDTVs will accept and display 480p (they might call it "EDTV" for extended definion TV, but they can't call it HDTV). Any HDTV set will accept 408i and 480p, as well as one or more of the HDTV formats (nearly all will accept 720p and 1080i, and a few will also accept 1080p). However, what the set displays depends only on the screen, and the input is converted (scaled) to match the screen's resolution ("native resolution" of the TV). So if you buy a 1080p LCD TV, and feed it 480i, the set will display 1080p. You won't see any more resolution than the 480i picture has, but it may look better than on a 480i or 480p display. But you can't make the resolution higher if all you have is 480i.

You're asking about 2 systems, so I will answer in 2 systems....
HDTV DOES support the 480p format.....

The SDTV systems cannot support 480p, because they only do ONE format.....and that format is 480i

You cannot make the resolution higher....
