I know the crimes he commited. I feel sorry for him, though. If you knew you were going to be executed in less than an hour, wouldn't you regret what you did? If he truly regrets what he did, then God will have some mercy, correct? I know he deserves to burn in hell, but he should be shown some mercy. And I'm not a Liberal, by the way. I am just a nice person, who thinks everyone deserves some mercy and forgiveness in their life.

I am a Christian, and I just think that every single person deserves some forgiveness.

I believe that Saddam does deserve forgiveness! I also believe that, even if he asks God and man for forgiveness, he must face the consequences of his actions!

Well , i dont think it's got anything to do with being a christian , though i apptreciate that abt Christianity , cuz im not one ... and i still have been depressed for the past few days cuz of his hanging.

I firmly believe you cannot kill another human or any life form, for WHATEVER reason , except for self defence perhaps.

Maybe it sounds too idealistic , but i just cannot come to terms with Saddam being hanged and Bush partying the new year away with the blood of AT LEAST 300,000 Iraqis and 3000 Americans on his hands.

Hate to bring God into this , but with such injustice one cannot but question faith.

I agree with you. Yet I was mobilized in 1990 to go fight him over his invasion of Kuwait which resulted in tens of thousands of dead. He is responsible, due to his invasion of Iran, for a number of deaths estimated up to 1 million. His crimes are legion and vast.
He has been a cruel, barbaric thug. Still, we, in a way, grew up with him. He was there on TV with his beret and mustache, a resilient charachter who withstood Bush 1 and Clinton. We see him from that perspective, where he's more of an image, a passing idea, more of a symbol than a real, brutal tyrant who brought misery to vast majority of people who were unfortunate enough to live under this rule. We were spared having to deal with him or our perspective would most likely be far less charitable.
Part of me says he deserves the justice he is due to receive but the better part of me asks that he be forgiven to live out his days like Manuel Noriega, alone, forgotten, marginalized, a mere footnote to history.
But while Saddam cannot escape man's justice, still, as I understand it, salvation is from God. We humans cannot begin to contemplate His grace nor who does or doesn't receive it. But, like you, a part, maybe the "better angels" Lincoln spoke of, of me hopes that even Saddam can know the peace which eluded him in this life which he made a living hell for so many others.

I agree and I pray that he seeks the truth and is forgiven and I think those who kill even in this situation takes away from what God has given us all and that is a time of grace to find the truth. I am a Liberal and a Christian and I first believe in Christ who came not to judge but to atone and offer us life. John 8. Christ taught let he without sin cast the first stone.

Not even Saddam is too evil to be saved. Hopefully he will ask Jesus for forgiveness and can be saved. I don't know though, he has killed a whole lot of people. Maybe he will have to spend some time in hell first.

Because you're human and it's in our nature to feel this way about someone who's to be put to death. I feel sorry for him kind of at the moment also. However, I would not feel sorry for him, if he were in the process of slaughtering a group of people and someone rose up against him at that moment and killed him instead. I think one reason I kind of feel sorry for him is because at the moment, he seems defenseless. I do think though, that he does not regret what he has done.

Love hopes in all things. I hear ya. I know the atrocities he has committed, and I am sure many of his victim's families will shed no tears... still, dying is a heavy thing. He had been caught up in hate and wrath his whole life. He has probably never known true happiness or love. Perhaps he will see clearly on the other side.

I agree with you. Jesus died for all sinners, even Saddam. I have prayed that he has been able to humble himself and ask for forgiveness. I know he has committed horrendous atrocities but I also know only God can judge him.

May God bless you. Have a Happy New Year.

If he were truly repentant, yes, I would have some compassion for him and feel that he deserved some clemency. But I haven't heard that he's ever expressed any sorrow or regret for what he did to his own people. Therefore, I find it hard to have any mercy for him.

Heck, I'm an atheist and I feel a bit sorry for him. I believe he deserves what he's had coming to him for some time now...but I can't imagine what it would be like to actually face the fact that they are about to kill you.

He's one of the big world dramas that's always been talked about off and on, what will we do now? (Oh yeah, maybe concentrate on Bin Ladin for once...)
