My car, Jeffrey, does the same thing. It's a salivary gland that the cat has no control over. It's over active and it "leaks" when he is happy. It is normal and I don't think there is anything that can be done about it. It doesn't hurt the cat and he is unaware that he is "leaking".

Is your cat indoors or outdoors? It is possible his throat hurts or has gotten into an irritant that hurts which is why he may not be swallowing. We had a cat come into the clinic with massive chemical burns in his mouth and refused to swallow to prevent further irritation. If this has occurred since birth it is possible he is just a drooler. If his drooling occurs when he is being loved on it is most likely he really loves it. If that is the case, it is a part of who he is. It's like some babies drool more than others as do animals are the same. Out of all of my classes (Veterinary Technician) we have discussed drooling and were told exactly what I have told you. Sorry.

I have a newly adopted 14 year old cat that does exactly the same thing as Walker. I have survived the slobber. I thought I might have to keep a box of kleenex by the couch and haven't done that yet.

I just accept that that is the way he is and I like that he is so affectionate.

Hi there...some cats are natural droolers when they are content. However, there are cats who drool as a result of medical complications that are caused by as gum and teeth disorders as some examples. There are other causes from illnesses, ingestion of toxic substances and many more.

Here's an article which I hope helps you better understand the causes of drooling and when it is normal and not normal: http://www.manhattancats.com/Articles/drooling.html

Is he on medication? My cat only drooled after he had a bad reaction to some medicine he had to take.

If he does it all the time, he could get dehydrated. Maybe you should ask your vet.

Don't go to the vet. About 30% of the cats I know do this. The cat is just really getting into it.

There is nothing you can do about it. They are just going to drool. My cats do it when they are happy and content, when they are relaxed. It's just something that some cats do.

Some cats just do that. Purring is a vibration of the vocal chords and happens in rhythm with their breathing. Sometimes they salivate when they are really relaxed.

I do it when I sleep too.

This will sound strange, but he is mildly reverting back to his kittenhood, when he cuddled with his mother and kneaded her belly while nursing. When he cuddles with you, he's actually salivating while "remembering" his nursing days! Not all cats do this, I had one who did and I guess I just put up with it because she was so affectionate. I guess the best you can do is to keep a towel handy.

Feline drooling is usually a sign of bad teeth, or gum disease. Have your vet take a look.
