Here's the situation: During the 1960s, there were protests against the Vietnam War. These were largely conducted by university students who were protesting the draft. It was after these protests that the people in power realized that when you educate the masses, they develop critical thinking skills and can become critical of the government and the status quo.

This is when public education began being defunded. Up until the 1960s, we had one of the best public education systems in the world. In the world. Depending on who is in power (Republicans or Democrats), public education is more defunded and ignored, generally Republicans don't want to pay for public programs like schools. They only want the rich going to school, those who can afford to pay.

So after Vietnam, public education started going downhill. An educated populace is a critical populace. Before you know it, citizens might actually start demanding other things, like national health insurance or stronger unions or increases in minimum wage or accountability of corporations! And the folks in power don't want any of that.

The best way to keep the people "down" is not to educate them. They do this by not funding schools appropriately, especially the schools that are attended by the working/non-working poor.

I don't see any evidence that this will improve. Educating kids to be critical thinkers is a death sentence for the status quo, for the rich, for corporations. They don't want that.

The "revolt" you are looking for is getting yourself to the polls and voting for Democrats every chance you get. These are the people who at least will not actively try to eliminate public schools entirely, which is the goal of the Republican party. Don't believe me? Try reading some of the text of "No Child Left Behind." That's some scary stuff, what they are doing to dismantle education in this country.

You probably would not get far that way. A poignant letter campaign to your state government officials is a good starting point. You can go stronger from there.
