having a new phone has nothing to do with the way you express your interest toward someone. Just walk up to him and introduce yourself. Guys love it since it makes them feel like they are IT and it lift their confident level. Give it a try; it will not fail....:-)

Ummm, pick up your phone, dial his number, make sure to press send or turn it on, and then wait for him to answer and go "hey! I like you, whacha doing tonight?"
