Faith is simpler when knowledge is lesser.

I think Dr Hawking misunderstood the Pope. Almost everything the Pope says is recorded.

Here is the Pope's Address to the participants in the Vatican conference on Cosmology on Saturday, 6 July 1985 posted on the Vatican's website: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/speeches/1985/july/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19850706_conferenza-cosmologia_en.html

From what I can read, the Pope did not tell the scientists not to study the origin of the universe.

He said that he believed that science could not discover everything. That "certain aspects of our lives rise above and move beyond the material dimension and, while having deep roots in the material, surpass the understanding which the natural sciences are capable of providing."

With love in Christ.

Well, if in fact the Pope really did so, it's news to Professor Hawking, who has been studying the beginning of the Universe since before the elevation of John Paul II. I strongly suspect a hoax, my friend!

The pope feared what Hawking might find. That was John Paul II, and he also said that evoltion should not be argued since there was proof for it. Catholic or not he was a good man and understood more then the church would ever allow him to tell.

Because the Pope is afraid that Stephen Hawking might find out that the Pope is not God.

I believe the article states why.

BUt it was not this Pope nor was it Stephen Hawking he said this to he said it regarding science in general, nice twist though to make it sound like they were going to be able to see all the way back to the big bang and were directly being warned against it.

LOL! How pathetic. As if Stephen Hawking is going to let the Pope tell him what to do.

To maintain the mythology, and by nature, the church's influence and power base in the world. Science disproves the biblical account on MANY, MANY things. Every time that science answers one of the big questions (how did we get here? where did we come from? etc...) the less power the mythology holds.

Because if Stephen does and discovers something, then the Pope will have to make religion try to explain it, and the Pope really hates homework.

Neat article. I hate while faith promotes lack of understanding. If we don't understand the respond, we could consistently no longer attempt to discern it out and fairly we could consistently characteristic it to a unquestionable god.

Because it was the work of God. Any other explanation would not be from God, making it evil. Why are you called 'The Dude' when we all know that you aren't of the bridges clan and not a part of the crew. "shut up Donnie'
