i watch alot of HGTV and i am wondering why people buy perfectly good, brand new furniture and "distress" it. i understand it makes it look "antique" or "old" but who wants old furniture? and couldn't they just go to a thrift store and get it alot cheeper? this distressing business doesn't make sense to me. isn't it just a waste of money?

Woodworkers who build period furniture (reproductions of old styles) will sometimes selectively distress the piece during the finishing process to make it look closer to how the originals look now. When they do this the emphasis is on trying to make it look like it has had 200-300 years of normal usage. At some point a designer heard about distressing furniture, and started banging up pieces of random furniture to make them look used, but the process must be selective for it to look right. The way I've seen some people "distress" furniture is just absolutely idiotic, but the original concept is to make new stuff look like real antiques. If the style of the furniture is new and modern distressing it just makes it look like sh!t.

Your right. It's stupid to buy it new and then distress it. Fine furniture is distressed before it is finished.
It's an 'era thing'.
