I've got a copied (burnt) version of Microsoft Office 2003. After I enter the product key, it says that it is corrupted or something along those lines. Is this because of the key or because the cd was a copied version?

It depends on what the message actually says. If you enter the wrong key, then it will tell you that the key is invalid. If you enter a valid key and the message says something says corrupted, then most likely the CD is bad.

You might want to retry installing with the CD. If you get the same error, you might want to try to burn another CD in case somehow the burning process corrupted it. It could also be that the file you burned to CD is corrupted in which case you'd have to find a new copy of the file to burn.

There are things they can do to CDs that make them not copied correctly, and then they can detect those errors made while copying. Also, Office 2003 requires activation, meaning that if someone has used the product key before you cannot use it again (since the software contacts Microsoft servers and tells it the product key, then the server tells the software if the key has been used before).

What is corrupt? Is your copy of MS Office corrupt? Did the copy come with the correct product key number? I would check that first and then try another copy of office.

Of course. MS keeps track of the product key that ships with the CD and information of the PC on which it was installed.

Without a purchased copy, you will not be able to update or obtain any fixes.

Its a problem with the CD. You'll need to purchase an original copy.

Another alternative is to use the free office suite - Open Office. It gives you everything that Microsoft Office gives you, but without the hefty price tag.

Not every key will work for every version of Office. ("Invalid Key")

You can purchase a home/school version of Office for pretty small money, and it will have a legit key.
