What is a good camera for someone starting out? I want to make my own movies and documentaries, but I don't want it to look amateur.

When looking at cameras look at the pixel ratings, the higher the better. Sony typically puts out decent camcorders for the money. But not only is it the camera you need to look at, if you do your own editing etc. which I do buy a dazzle unit which is made by pinnacle they cost between $50 and $100 and can be use for hooking up multiple capturing devices to your computer. As far as software I suggest Ulead's video software it is awesome in my opinion and allows you to do everything from frame to frame. Good luck and hope you make it big!!!

Really depends on your budget.
for about $2500 you can get a Canon GL2, a very good mini dv camera.
Do not get any kind of VHS or VHS C, they are cheap yes but crappy quality. Mini DV or digital 8 is the way to go. go to video makers website they usually do a break down of cameras, from the good to the crappy.

I am taking Film and TV Production at my school and we use Sony PD 150 Cameras and they work really well. After we edit our footage you can't even tell the difference between our films and one you would see on TV. ,definitely go with Sony even if it is not the PD
