Throughout life I’ve been taught not to make assumptions. How is faith different than making a huge assumption?

Assuming is when you believe based on evidence. Faith is believing regardless of evidence.

Because of our weaknesses often times these are intermingled to a point but they are certainly not the same. A true faith is based on truth. Sometimes it can be as simple as having faith in the person driving the car to get me home safely. It is a bit of an assumption but if I know the person well and how they drive I can have faith in that persons ability. When it comes to true religion if one believes what is true it is a true faith. Now many will debate how one knows what is true and yes because many believe in that which is false it casts a shadow on any type of belief. However when God opens ones eyes to see (understand) and believe in Him by speaking to Him from His word and causing Him to see His works then one knows because it has been revealed to Him. Even as I know my friend because of my personal relationship with him I know God because He has brought me into a relationship with Him. Now knowing Him and His righteousness and truth and also seeing His track record of truth I can believe everything He says as true and that would be a faith that is not blind or unreasonable but based on experience and history. So a true faith is far different than just an assumption that what I believe is true based only on something I've read or been told but has a faith based on reality and experience.

Beautiful question, religions and congregations are nothing more than a naive assumption. Most people who follow a set religion give no insight toward other ideas and beliefs. You will find most hardcore religious fanatics are absorbed with their own assumptions that they will look down upon others who do not follow their sightless beliefs. Someone who takes time to learn of the other opinions in this world are a step above the foolish followers. But, those who decide the truth for themselves, without the outside influences are the truly sighted.

is disbelief any different?

I mean is saying that the only things that are real, are those which can be objectively proved, and that all things that are real CAN be objectively proved, and shown through and to physical senses, all that different?

I believe in something I call God, and I belive in souls and such. I do not consider myself to have faith though, because i have had experiences thatprove to me beyond a doubt that these things do, for a fact exist.

can you prove that colors look to you, as they look to me? can you prove that colors exist, and are visible, to a person who was born without vision?

does the fact that you cannot prove that colors are actually percivable and discernable, to a person who was born blind, change your "faith" in being able to see color?

is the REASON you do not doubt this, MERELY because you can be told by others that they see it like you do? what if you were the minority? would you be able to see color any less? no.

edit: well, there ya go then, just take the"you" in a generic sense instead of you specifically.

It is not faith that you should seek it is faith in God. Faith in God is a gift and is given to those who seek the truth. Through faith comes revelation it is not assumption it is the truth revealed to you by faith in God through his revelation.

Because, as is written in the bible,...

"Faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the word,..."

In other words,...
-Faith is based on what God says is true.
-Assumptions are based on what you THINK is true.
