How about a nice restaurant?
Ice skating?
Some scenic location near you?
Dinner at your place? (if you can cook)
It very much depends on what kind of girl we're talking about.

Wherever you take her....especially if it is the first or second date....it should always be somewhere you can talk or at least share what you are doing. Dinner will allow that but can be expensive. So maybe just a coffee shop where you can talk.
One other option is a art museum or just about any kind of museum. You both get a chance to be together and share your ideas about what you see.
The main idea is to be able to talk and learn about each other.
A movie may be fun but how much will you know about her when your done? Nothing. And the more you can actually share and talk about the better off you are. While you would not want to talk about personal things on your first few dates this gives you a chance to know personalities. And that is very important.

Check around town for shows. Look in the LA Times Calendar section for plays. Look for local comedy clubs. Some places offer dinner and a stage show for one price. If you want to do something real interesting, go to the early (really early) morning flower shops or food shops in the wholesale district. Walk the 3d Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Watch the submarine races or buffalo fights.

Teach her to do something you like to do or have her teach you something that she does. One of the things I will always remember is laughing with my boyfriend the time I tried to teach him to knit. I have an upcoming payback chess lesson, and I bet it'll be just as fun. Plus, this way you're guaranteed a second date!

This time of year? Ice skating- but don’t act macho or try to show off. Also surprise tickets to small concerts are so fun!
