I'm in my early 20's and I have been using Proactive once a day but it hasn't really worked for me. My mom wants me to use it twice a day. I have no idea how to get rid of this acne. I have heard birth control pills might work but I'm not sure if that's true or not. I didn't have acne like this when I was a teenager.

Yes, birth control works, if you're a girl. I'd seriously consider it.
I am a Medical Liaison in a group home for developmentally disabled individuals. I just had a girl of 23 start on the birth control pill Yasmin about 3 months ago. For 2 months now, her skin is beautiful. Go for it. Beautiful skin is waiting!

Birth control works wonders! But if that's not an option, or if you don't want the extra hormones, I can at least tell you what has worked for me. Proactive was a big flop with me as well. I currently use a good exfoliant (the kind you can feel, not that gentle crap) and after that I swipe my face with the REGULAR strength Oxy pads. It keeps me clear, except a few during 'that time'. Which is easily tamed with some cream. Anything Oxy is great.
Good luck, I know it sucks. Every body's different, so once you find something that works you'll know it. Give every product you try at LEAST a couple weeks. Don't be afraid to try different things together. That's how I came to my combination, trial and error. You'll find it, then acne will be a thing of the past.
Oh! And there is also skin clearing make-up that is excellent. Nuetrogena makes it. Try that too, they have foundation and powder.

I would visit a primary care doctor or dermatologist. There are many topical preparations and oral medications which can help acne. The correct medication is dependent on what type of acne you have, and how bad the inflammation is. All treatments for acne can take 4-6 weeks to show optimal results as the comedones (white heads) can take that long to form. Some oral contraceptives are known for helping women with acne. For this, a primary care doctor or gynecologist would be your best bet.

Please go to the doctor or dermatologist. Acne is hormonal. Proactiv is not going to help your acne. The doctor can give you some prescriptions that will help clear the acne up.

go to your doctor or dermotologist. There are so many great things out there that they can prescribe for you that far surpass anything over the counter. BCP's help some but not for everyone and the risks associated with them don't outweight the benefits.

Call that Dr.
