Yep, you are so accurate. I can size a person up, just by the way the hands are shook. Most of the time I am right. It is important upon a hand shake, that eye contact is met. Could be that your friend is bashfull. Keep helping him and he will conquer his downfall. There is another reason he might look away and I hesitate to tell you. But help him to understand that he should not look away. Remain to be a good friend.

Tell him to say hello to the person before reaching for their hand. Tell him to concentrate on that person alone, as if they are wearing a suit made out of 20 dollar bills. Then and only then can he proceed to shake someones hand.

Although your freind is NOT trying to be rude, it certainly might appear as such. He must be intentional about trying to change this habit. He shoud practice. He needs to tell himself "I'm about to shake a few hands here, so I must remember to make eye contact with the person". It may take a while, but he'll get it.

Generally this body language means the person is hiding something. He can't be cured, as it is not an afflication, more of an indication. He will stop when he is comfortable with people knowing about whatever it is he is hiding about his charactor.

Not only is it impolite, but let him the know that he gives the impression to others as being sleazy and not to be trusted. Is that the sort of thing he is striving for?

Your friend is shy and or hiding something and or lieing.
Your friend can combat the problem by looking at people right below the eye. Kind of in the lower eye socket, and it will seem your friend will have DIRECT eye contact. Your friend might feel better about doing this and feeling more confident.

Maybe his been in the witness protection program all along and he's checking for cameras and spies. Seriously, though, he sounds shy and maybe you should just tell him. I support you. Go ahead

He's shy.
Just encourage him to have faith in himself and self-worth. It isn't the most impolite thing in the world, but he should attempt to change.
