It depends upon what it is growling at. I didn't like my dog growling on occasion at my cats and then one night he growled like he did at my cats and I began to scold him. But, there was a gigantic cougar on my roof getting ready to jump down and eat my neighbor's dog as a midnight snack! It can be extremely helpful at times to have a dog that growls. But, if a dog is growling at YOU, that's another matter. I instantly no longer like a dog that growls at me. I do not keep them anymore. A dog that growls at you when you have never done anything wrong to it needs to go find another place to live.

Don't punish but do scold just sternly say the chihuahuas name and if they keep it up say HEY or NO GROWLING and if it's other people he or she is growling at pick up the chihuahua because they are notorious for ankle nipping and pant leg grabbing i have two chihuahuas and know where you are coming from growling should always be scolded because if he/she gets away with growling he/she will think that if growiling is allowed biting will be too. and by all means when you are holding the chihuahua and he/she is growling tell someone before they even ask that they probably shouldn't pet the chihuahua because more often than not people will want to. but be consistent with scolding and hopefully the chihuahua will get the message that growling is discouraged. Also on a related note try to get your chihuahua around all ages and types of people and hopefully will get used to people and become social and friendly my chihuahuas are very friendly and people love to see that they get kisses instead of snapped at.

What is the dog growling at? To train the dog not to growl a spat and a firm "NO" Eventually all it will take is a no. Or a squirt bottle, or mister, every time the dog growls spray and tell it no. Spray the dog in the face.
I do not recommend holding the dogs head down on the floor, all you are going to do is piss the dog off, it may back fire and cause the dog to become more aggressive towards you.

NO - U do not punish growling, as this is a dog's only means to let U know that they're getting very worried/upset, and the next step the dog may take is a bite.
if U punish a dog for trying to communicate that they're getting very stressed, they have No way to warn - and then they go direct from 'worry' to 'bite'.
this tends to get dogs very dead, very fast.
if Ur Chi is getting frightened, U need to desensitize them to whatever it is that scares them - start at a distance where the dog is aware of the scary thing, but not stressed.
ask Ur Chi to do some things that they know well- like 'sit', or 'beg', and reward them for doing those simple acts. As long as the dog can focus and perform, and will eat a treat, they are 'under threshold': aware, but not too scared.
then over time, U increase the THREE D's:
* distance : get closer to the formerly scary thing
* duration : ask the dog to sit for 10 seconds vs 6, or lie-down for 5 mins vs 3
* distractions: increase the intensity or number of distractions
only ADD one 'D' at a time - if U cut distance, add more treats AND ask for a shorter sit, and so on.

Has it just started growling? Is the dog growling at you or at someone else? If it is growling at you and just started maybe something is wrong with your dog. Maybe it is hurting somewhere. If it is growling at someone else in your home
then you should say no each time it growls and make it go in another room. Sometimes dogs growl because they sense
danger.

My veterinarian told me, that when you want to discourage, a dog's bad behavior, get a small spray bottle, fill it with water, and when your dog disobeys, give him a couple of squirts and say No or Bad. I've tried it with mine, and now all they have to do is look at the squirt bottle and they stop doing whatever it is, that they aren't supposed to do. No need to punish!

how long and what does she growl out? that depends. it is a natural reaction, but is she mad, nervous... defensive. that is what you need to figure out. if it is aggressive behavior, you do need to change it. if it is scared behavior you can't give it attention... when she growls you need to use a word or phrase like STOP or HEY. and when she stops, you give her a treat. as SOON as she does it again... repeat! it's all repetition
good luck

u shold cause when they get older then they'll be more agressive and they may bight ur guests or atack u. If u dont punish him for growling then ur practicly saying to him its okaiii to do that. So..... to let him no that thats wrong u say no ....... wat ever his name is....... bad boy or bad girl no growling and gently tap there nose when u say that. It is natural but still if u dont like him doing that and dont correct him then ur sayin to him its okaiii for him to do that. Like i said if u dont correct him when he's young he'll do it even more and more agressive when hes older. Hope this helps~~~!!!!!

Yes you should...push his head down to the floor and hold it there saying no sternly. Do not let him up until he stops growling. That shows him you are the dominant one and puts him in his place where he should be.
