My dog is 1 year old mixed breed, 60pounds, used to having free reign, and very hyper. I love him very much, but right now he cannot live with us. He is currently staying at my parents until we can buy a house where he can have a yard for him to play and run. Recently we brought him to our apartment (which we are not allowed to have pets) for a few days, which was my Christmas present from my husband (he knows that I want my dog here and not at my parents). Anyway, he knows that I am his master, and listens to me and my husband, but he get very hyper and even crys/whimpers if he has to be put into another room when I am at my parents house. He has always slept next our bed in our room (of course on my side) and when we had him over for X-mas it was like he had never stayed with my parents. Also he can't be around other dogs without barking at them, what causes this? Any advice would be appriciated.

Young dogs do this, they don’t grow out of it for at least two years. My advice is when you settle down, get another dog so it has something to keep it occupied, happy, and friendly.

Well...the barking at other dogs thing is definetly a territorial thing. If that is something you want to stop then you will have to socialize him more often. The more he is with other dogs the less threatened he will get. Some dogs are more territorial than others. The crying and whimpering when he is in a separate room is separation anxiety. He is living in a separate home from you now...to be put in a separate room when you go visit your parents is probably torture for him and another sign that you will be leaving him again. I think once you have settled down to a place where your dog can be with you it will be like this.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL2J4

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

To help with the hyperness I would reccomened walking him at least once daily for about 45 minutes (morning is the best time) This way he will be tired and calmer throughout the day. Also use a doggy backpack on your walks and fill it up with water bottles. This will give him a job to do and will make the walk more intense in return he will become a much calmer dog throughout the day.

Becuase your dog seems to be an active dog the walk is very important to him and is a must. Please remember this even when you get your new house with a backyard for him to play in. He will still need to be walked everyday, don't use the backyard as an excuse to not walk your dog. Walking with your dog allows you and your dog to bond on a higher level. It will balance your dog and make him a better overall happy dog. =)

Good luck in finding a new home! Best of wishes to you and I hope (know) this will help! =P

Get books and videos from the library on dog training. If you have a small dog, avoid media about large breed dogs, or if your dog is big, the small breed information will not do much good. He needs to be excersized daily. And two 15 minute training sessions a day are what he needs most. I'm sorry he can't live with you.

Good Luck!

Once again, my apologies for you missing out on your dog. Depending on the breed, he may decide you are not his true pack leader, if you aren't the one he is with all of the time. I hope that this does not happen to you.

As far as the crying/whimpering this might be a sign of separation anxiety, which can be overcome by short stints of separation, very short to begin with progressively getting longer. Some dogs need medication for this. As far as him barking at other dogs, this could be simply that he wants to play, you can stop this. There are 2 schools of thought. One is to let them bark themselves out and then praise them when they are quiet, long process and causes lots of headaches. The second is to discipline them when they bark for extended periods of time, and praise them when they are quiet. This way is much quicker and causes less headaches.

I had a little Min-Pin/Min Dachshund(sp) mix puppy. We used to live in an apartment where pets weren't allowed and we were afraid all the barking would blow our cover. I'm not sure what causes your dog to bark at other dogs (maybe jealousy, curiosity, etc.), but if he barks alot and you want him to stop, you can hold his snout (when he barks) and say in a firm voice, "DON'T BARK" (be sure to do this every time), and he won't do it as much. Our vet gave us this advise for our dog and it actually worked.

get him to a very good obdeence class soon and then people will rave about how well your dog behave and wish you had him home with you more often.... how often is your dog allowed around other dogs... the barking collar works great a friend had it for her dog, you could try that as well, but for the cost of an obedience class it will well be worth it and he will make new doggy friends as well. have fun use this time with him for a new chance. good luck on finding your new home, being with your pet is very important i know.... good luck

this is just normal puppy behavior

he is still kind of like a puppy

we got both of our dogs when the were 1 1/2 years and they listen to us but they still bark at other dogs but we just deal with it

about they hyper part you should exercise him a lot

like run him every night or every morning then he'll be really tired

usually its just because he's got lots of energy
