D16 video with a size of 2880x2048 (equivalent of 5.9 MP). Although technically you could argue that 35mm scanned at 4K is the "highest MP," since once its scanned its technically video. Hope this helps!

Mega pixels. More will give you a bigger print size, if required. However as people are finding, it is very difficult to squeeze dozens of millions of pixels into some cameras and keep the quality up. This is particularly true of compact cameras. If you are buying a compact camera I would make do with 6 or 7, still enough for an A3 print should you ever require one. But images at all sizes up to this will benefit from the lower pixel count. The more pixels squeezed on, the smaller each pixel, so the less light it can record, and so the more amplificiation the camera needs to add, the more the amplification, the more degradation occurs. Also compact cameras have puny processors, if you ask them to process big 12mp files then they need to cut corners, expecially in JPEG mode. How to choose a good camera: Choose a known brand. Go into the shop and handle it (this is the most important thing really) Go for a flexible zoom, Ricoh and Panasonic do some 7MP models with a good wide angle and good tele without going over the score. Budget for extra memory, spare battery and carry case.
