I am pregnant with twins
The doc told me it runs generally from the mothers side and not the fathers.
My father was one of twins, and 2 of my cousins had twins, no twins on my hubbies side.
There are 2 ways of getting twins, either the woman releases 2 eggs while ovulating and two different sperm fertilize them, or you have one egg fertilized with 2 sperm.
Genetics play a big part in twins, if they run in the family, also the woman's age, if she is older twins are more common, and if she has had a few baby's the chances go up.

Pretty much it is both in any situation. Each plays a role, some bigger than others but a role none the less.
In the case of fraternal twins it is the mother (with a little bit of the father too) who is responsible. The mother's body releases two eggs and both eggs get fertalized by a semen each (this is the little bit the father plays because he already releases a lot of semen).
With identical twins I believe that genetics on either side, mother or father play the role with those. If the father has identical twins in his family there would be a chance that he would have identical twins too and the same goes for the mother. Of course the mother's egg has to split to have identical twins so she too has a part in it no matter what.

Female because you can only produce as many babies as there are eggs. Women usually produce only one egg, but on a rare occasion will produce two, or perhaps the egg will split into two and create identical twins. Identical twins are sort of a freak of nature, scientists have proven it is not genetically inherited. Genetics only come into play with fraternal twins and not identical. Hope this helps.
Think of it this way, a man produces thousands of sperm, and a woman produces on average one egg. If a man was responsible for multiple births women would be having huge litters of children instead of one.
However, if multiple births occur when embryos are implanted in a woman then this is the doctors fault, not either parent.

No one. Identical twins are when the fertilized egg splits into two separate embryos and develop into twins, fraternal twins are a result of the woman releasing two eggs that are fertilized at the same time, hence the reason why they look different.

Genetics. If twins run on either side or both, it's the male and female. Either way it has to be genetics.

I agree with Dolly. She explained it well. I did a TON of research when I was pregnant with my sons.
There are a lot of myths regarding who is responsible though.
