culd be most people do not understand what they were feeeling at the time they said it or thought i love u captured their feelings at the time.

a lot of people also think that just because someone says i love you, they should not get into a fight or disagrement with you. love fades and woe unto you if you dont have real friendship and companionship after the mushy mushy feelings of love have worn off.
you can fall in and love over and over again with the same prson for as long as you have a good and lasting friendship, as you discover a new reason to love someone with each passig day.

Most guys like to manipulate women just by using those exact three words. I'll feel bad for a guy who actually means it, but ends up getting nothing.

Lots of reasons. It helps them get what they want, be it sex, money, gifts.... It's a horrible way to have to get them, but people are always gonna do it. I personally would never use these three words to get what I want, but I know a lot of people who would, and it sucks. They obviously have no conscience.

Why do people use them at all? Who needs love?

Because it means accept me, I accept you. Plus they may think that that is what you want to hear and they want to please you.

It is, I believe, one of the most over-used phrase in the English language and as a result, it's value has been lost.

Maybe they mean them at the time, and then the person's feelings change.

I know, i agree
i absolutely hate it when people say it as soon as they JUST get into a relationship and they dont know much about each other.
theres nothing that pisses me off as much as that,

Doesn't make sense to me. Usually it is to get what they want or in the moment of sexual pleasure.
