my family just got a kitten, and i know that when you want to switch brands of cat food, you need to gradually switch them. but i was wondering if you have to do that for the flavors of the same brand also? or does it not matter?

thanks:]

Hi there...as a general rule even within the same brand of food, it is a good idea to gradually mix the two to minimize stomach distresses such as diarrhoea. The ingredients vary even between the same brand and kittens digestive system is more sensitive to sudden changes.

Of course you can switch between flavors. How would you like it if you had to eat the exact same thing every meal. But if you want to switch brands of food, do it gradually. What I mean by that is to do in the span of ten days, each day adding more of the new food. And then on day ten they should be completely on the new food. But, unless your cat has allergies, don't be afraid to play around with different brands of food because some cats only like one kind of food for a short while. And if that happens, go back to the brand of food that you started with. Hope this helps.

Not only should it not matter how you switch flavors, I give my cats a choice (sometimes) by putting some of both flavors in the same bowl. It seems when I do this, one will take one flavor, and the other cat eats whats left.

nope, not a problem. With cats you can switch food more easily then dogs. Flavors don't matter so much so you will be fine to feed any flavor.

go ahead it won't hurt anything, but you might want to see if the new kitten likes the flavor so buy only one can see if they eat it. cats should have both dry and can food not just soft food in front of them so make sure the new kitten gets hard food too... for its teeth to grow strong and healthy.

I give my four cats different flavors everyday! Would you like to eat the same thing day in and day out? All animals need variety! This way their life isn't so boring! They have something to look forward to.

If the cat likes the taste of it, it should not matter.

I would caution you to be aware of the quality of the food.

A lot of store bought food (not from a vet) is really poor in nutritional value and may contribute to feline diabetes later in life.

If its the same brand I wouldn't worry about it. Cats are very easy to switch over foods. But just to be safe for the first week I would do half and half. She should be perfectly fine.

Shouldn't matter. The only thing changed is flavor. Not main ingredients.

Good Luck!

As long as its the same brand there shouldn't be a problem.
