I have a better suggestion:
Find a local state or metro park and rent a cabin. You could spend easily $500 - $1000 on camping equipment and still not have something that you would need and then use only once this coming year. And then after you buy the needed stuff and use it once you have to store it or get rid of it.
Cabin prices around here start out around $100 for a 3 night stay. The cabins include:
cots and sleeping pads
stoves
lanterns
tables
chairs
electric
running water
The money that could be saved could be spent on extending the weekend or going someplace in addition like the zoo or a waterpark.

you have a tent. you have a lantern. get a couple of flashlights, RAIN GEAR, twine, spare clothes, spare socks. bug repellant, a first aid kit, a good knife, a hatchet or axe, and possibly a saw, cooking utensils, a grid to cook on, and a good sized water container. bring a tarp for a shade, and to shelter from the inevitable rain. bring snacks like granola, beef jerky, and trail mix. something to keep the boys occupied when they begin complaining about the heat, bugs, cold, mosquitos, rain, sun, eachother, ect. a chain for the dog, dog food, a water dish for the dog. camera. camping is a wonderful family experience, when i was a young child(around 6), my family(mom, dad, little sister, and little bro, still in diapers) would go into the woods(not a park, but wilderness), with a tarp, a knife, and some water and food. those were great times.

You will need water containers, obviously you will take toiletries etc, you will also need washing up facilities and utensils ( always use anti bac washing up liquid), you would be wise to get some wind breakers too! Don't forget a pump for the air beds otherwise your lungs will be pumping out your chest! flipflops in case you need the loo in the night! Insect repellent.. Thats off the top of my head, Im sure others will pick up on anything i have missed!!!! Good luck have a good holiday, we love camping, fresh air does you good!!! You will sleep like babies!!!!!!
Happy new year!!

Way too much to advise here. I use a camping list I print out on Excel before I go out each time. Go to a local camping store and a clerk will fall al over you with help as he sees the big sale coming. Universities have sales of used camp stuff. "Play it again sports is great."

the best thing to get is an RV that you just pack the house into, but barring that here is a list.
tent with plenty of room and screening, sleeping bags, air mattresses, wet weather gear, hiking boots for all, back packs with space for extras, medical pack, ( i.e. bandages various sizes, tape, small splints, ointment for burn and bite, hydro-perox.), emergency portable 2-way radio, lanterns, small pocket flashlights, matches w/ waterproof holder, sterno fuel cans, water canteens and jug, non-perishable food for 3 days more than your stay, extra bateries for lights and such, deck of cards, good book, 100 feet nylon rope, dog restraints that allow movement within a certain range, tick spray for dog, ( do it nightly), propne single burner cooker w/ tank, cook stove gas and/ or coal burning. that should get you started.

depends on the tyoe of camping? are you going "girlie" camping on a site with showers etc or wilderness camping where you take all you need in a rucksack?
if its the latter then travel as light as you can.
if however you are going to drive to a campsite and unload then you can take as much as will fit in your car..
good sleeping bags are essential
