I know she waited too long to be seen, but she finally went to ER last night. After numerous tests, they found a "growth" the size of a football on one of her ovaries. She's 47, otherwise good health, normal weight, good family history, non-smoker/drinker. Could it be cancer? She will have surgery Thursday.

The growth will need to be biopsied before you will have an answer.

My son had a tumor the size of a volley ball (what is it with describing tumors like sports equipment or various size fruits - ha, ha) and many, many more of different sizes in his abdomen. We were horrified. But, than, what do you do? You just learn to cope.

We waited too long for him too . . he just seemed like a normal, healthy teenager complaining about aches and pains (he was practicing on his basketball team). Who would have thought he had stage IV abdominal cancer.

It is good that your sister is in excellent health. If it is cancer than she will be strong enough to fight the cancer . . and the same if it is a cyst . . you've done all you can for now.

Stay strong. Stay positive.

Even the Dr's won't know until they get in there and get it to have a biopsy done. Lots of women get cysts or tumorous growths on the ovaries and uterus', but they aren't always cancerous. It doesn't matter either if you are a smoker or drinker, you CAN get cancer. I have already lost some friends and family members to cancer who never smoked a day in their lives, and some never drank either. I am sure it is just a benign tumor, just keep her in your prayers.

I'm not sure about the cancer, it could be but don't count on it. It could be just an ovarian cyst. My friend had one the size of a grapefruit and it made her drop to her knees with abdominal pain. I can see your concern, it's your sister, I know all about worrying about a sister. But chances are it's something minor, well, less major than cancer. She should just hang on and go to the doctor on thursday and they will let her know. In the mean time, just being there for her is better than showing her your worry.

It could be cancer, but then again it could be an ovarian cyst or benign tumor. You will just have to wait it out and see what the biopsy results say.

You won't know until after the surgery and they biopsy the growth . Blessings and luck to you, your sister and your family.

Only the doctors can tell. Sounds painful. Wish I could help, but I'm no doctor.
