I have a nine-month old bassett hound who seems to be panting more today than usual. It's a few degrees warmer in the house than normal, but it's only around 62 degrees. His activity level is the same, and the only thing that seems different about him is that he might be warmer than usual. He was at the vet a couple of months ago, and he didn't have any heart or lung problems at that time. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

this does not mean he is running fever............
a dogs temperature is anormal at 102 degrees, so if it is 70 degrees they are very warm especially when active. Panting is how they sweat. the dog is just a bit warm

The only reliable way to check a pet's temperature is with a thermometer rectally. Feeling the nose or ears is not accurate. The normal temperature is warmer than humans, it will be about 100-102.5 103 is a mild fever. You should make an appointment for your dog to be seen by a veterinarian if you think something is wrong.

The dog may be dehydrated. Some ice water should help, however if the dog pants for more than 2 hours straight, take it to the vet.

No your dog doesn't have a fever. Panting is the way of cooling down.

no its not a sign of fever. dogs have to pant to get rid of body heat that humans get rid of by sweating. dog only have small sweat glands on the bottom of their pads on their feet so the pantign gets rid of the heat that the small glands dont.

Good question - I've heard about things like this before. If he's not acting different, maybe he's just a little under the weather today. He is pretty young, so you never know.

He is probably just hot, I would give him a bowl of water with ice cubes in it.
