If you're not on a huge budget, I'd try a jewelry mart...but through a recommendation if you can find one. I know of one in the Puente Hills/Covina area if you wouldn't mind taking a trip up.
But I wouldn't go with Robin's Brothers, or other retail places. We went into Robin's brothers....it's like buying a car...one person comes up to catch your interest...then a next person to try to sell...then another to try to close the deal. And the prices...were like a car price. Don't get me wrong...it was a good place to find a style I liked. But no, I wouldn't suggest buying it from there no matter how much they pushed.
My friend wanted a 1ct princess...and literally it was over $15K easy. The jeweler my friend got it from was priced 1/3 of that. And her ring was custom made. So don't go with the retail places. They pay overhead and commission that's a lot higher. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AROUND.

buy what you are comfortable with - price wise. Plain golf bands are just fine - wait till you are more established financially before you buy a diamond. Buy the best you can afford but usually the small independent retailer will give you a better price than a mall store. They will also "haggle" some - if you insist on wanting a diamond be sure to compare the quality (check some on line diamond sites for information) and be sure to get a GIA rating (preferably a laboratory grading). Compare and shop

Try to find an jewelry store that is going out of business. They have some great sales. I would say a pawn shop, they have some really nice sets from people who have gotten divorced or never made it to the alter. You can always lie about where you got them. No one is going to know unless you tell them.

Go to Wal-Mart. It may sound cheap, but they have real diamond rings that are very nice. They have nice gold bands, too. Doesn't hurt to look. Good luck and congratulations!

Shane Company. No doubt about it. They are awesome, and will work with your price range.
