Literally: Would it make sense for firefighters to fight fires with fireblasters, or matches, or MORE fire.
Moral: When you do something as bad as what someone is doing to you, you only place yourself in the same amount of wrong as the other. As they have all said, two wrongs do not make a right. Always make sure that you put yourslef in the positive before you try to react.

OK. It is an Abigail Van Buren quote. That means it probably has something to do with relationships gone bad. So, my guess is that it means that people who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes. Since Dear Abby is involved, all bets are off on the meaning.

Try this:
People who fight against their enemies with hate, will end up miserable.
It's kind of like the Bible quote about heaping coals of ashes on your enemy's head by being nice to them.

It's sort of like saying those who get down with the dogs will come up with fleas. IN OTHER WORDS those who fight back at the fighters are just as bad or in as much trouble as the other.

Did you make that one up yourself?
Or they break the forest fires path and save the rest of land its flame were traveling toward.
