In the context of the question, the vague "Enlightenment" refers to absolute freedom from all desires supported by capitalism. It is certainly not the apex of knowledge or education, as presumed in intel_knight's response. This hypothetical person holds no value in wealth and no concern for the benevolence of contemporaries. Thus is the paradox.

"Enlightened" by whom and in what regard? And why would such an "enlightened" person wish to withdraw from society? Enlightenment is meant to benefit society if I understand the concept.
Jesus was a carpenter by trade. He didn't retire or withdraw. The Apostle Paul was a tent maker by trade. He supported himself during his ministry while writing the majority of the New Testament. He was clearly "enlightened" yet he worked daily with his hands and sought out others to interact with. He did not withdraw.
The Bible teaches any spiritual gifts (enlightenment) we may receive are for the benefit of others. Also, it teaches that we are to work and contribute to society.
I guess enlightenment can mean different things to different people though.

I think that this type of person would try and change society from within by working in professions such as teaching, social work or nursing. One can always advocate for others and devote time and energy to volunteer and perhaps not reshape society completely but maybe positively influence one person. Goodness has a ripple effect and doesn't stop with the first act of altruism.

A truly enlightened being would realize that non-duality requires that you cannot withdraw from anything. You could be in any occupation, there are outlets for compassion in the most mundane of industries.
He/She might be disappointed by a capitalistic society, on the grounds that it causes much unnecessary suffering...but that doesn't mean you can't live there.

How does an enlightened being live in a capitalistic society?
With GREAT COMFORT!
In a free society we can become just about anything we desire. Even a Welfare Bum!
There are always places to hide!

I have worked for myself as a graphic designer for a long time. I also did temp work - I never worked anywhere for more than 2 weeks because I did not want to get into the inner workings, as it were. There are careers with children (teacher, assistant, day care provider, speech therapist, etc.) that can be very rewarding.
Peace!

Heres what i wrote on the same question. the respond is that little ones can exchange the international, they want the international to be suited for each guy or woman, a international with out with out conflict or starvation. it is shown in many little ones strikes international, particularly interior the 60's & 70's. regrettably the older people get the less they suspect that the international can exchange right into a stronger place and can fairly themselves be as wealthy and influential as possible whilst letting a million/third of the international stay in poverty. specific, i'm a little ones, specific, i help it (for sure), yet who can blame me for desirous to make the international a stronger place for each guy or woman?

Just like he/she would live anywhere else. A job sustains the stomach, it is the calling that sustains the psyche.

Are you saying that you are the enlightened one? If so, define "enlightened", because inquiring minds want to know.
