It was extremely rude and inappropriate, workplace or no workplace. In future, if she is ill-mannered to ask personal questions like that again, continue to say (loudly and disbelievingly): "I can't believe you'd ask me a question like that".

What is your personal relationship with your boss? While it might not have been particularly polite, your response was. Without knowing the rest of the conversation, it's difficult to surmise if she was speaking out of line with the rest of the conversation. You may need to ask her of her motive. Maybe she was just asking a question that many others had been pondering. Maybe she was trying to make you look bad. maybe she was labeling you unavailable to someone in the group of whom she is fond, but has that person has an eye for you instead. Maybe she was trying to tell you that your actions are public fodder and that you might need to be discreet. Again, until you approach her, you'll only have conjecture rather than fact. Even after you talk to her, you still may not have the fact, but you'll be closer to the truth than you are now.

Whoa. You're right--she's out of line. She may just have no clue on social boundaries versus work boundaries rather than some ulterior motive. Who knows....
In the future, if she says anything idiotic or embarrassing like that, don't respond with an answer. Either ask her why she's asking, or just tell her that you don't plan on talking about sex, one way or the other, at work. Its a lose-lose conversation. Wonder why she would do that? Very odd... I'm with you on this one...

It was rude. You seem to have handled it well, good job for staying professional. Did she know the last guy you went out with? I think it's safe to say you should remove yourself once the conversation begins to get personal and she is around, that way you avoid conflict with the boss and are not put on the spot again like that. Work hard and keep your nose clean, you just may end up with her job.

It also breaks most employers versions of their sexual harassment policies, and the Asst could be fired over that "general talking." Authoritative figures and personal questions do NOT coincide.

I agree with your first answer. If she does that again in front of everybody, then tell her it's none of her business what you do in your personal life. If it continues, then I think you should go higher than her and make a complaint. Best of luck to you.

You should let her know that in no uncertain terms that your sex life is private, and that it was very inappropriate for her to even broach the subject at all, let alone at work in front of coworkers.

I think you are reading into this too much. It's 2006, people speak more openly nowadays.
