Right now, that would probably do. When the cross-border laws change in the new year, you may have to have proof of US citizenship. Such as your birth certificate; a passport would be better.
When my son travelled to NYC from Toronto, he used his passport.

This website lists the documentation required. Dress warmly and bring comfy walking shoes! There's lots to do and see! IF you are coming and going before January 27, 2007 by AIR, then a passport is not required.

After January 23rd (I think thats the date) all flights into the U.S. will require a passport for U.S. and Canadian citizens
