I think I may need my serpentine belt replaced on my 1995 VW Jetta. There is a very annoying high pitched whirring sound. Could this be it? And, how much would I expect to pay for it to be replaced? Also, what would happen if it weren't replaced in time? Could this do any damage to my vehicle?

Chances are that it is a serpentine belt. You can pick up a belt for $20-$30 and do it yourself, or spend $100 at a dealer. If you dont replace it in time, it will break, resulting damage if you do not immediately cease operation of the vehicle when it happens. If it were to happen, you woud lose power steering and you would over heat because the power steering and water pumps would not be operating. You would also have no A/C. So, do it now before you do expensive damage.

If the belt is bad it will shows signs, cracked, chunks missing. Brownish, dry, brittle looking thing. A high pitched whirring sound, sounds more like a bearing or power steering whine maybe Any drive-ability complaints? How many miles? What kind of up keep has been done? Without actually hearing it, could be a number of things. Consequences of a failed drive belt usually result in over heating due to the water pump not Turing. No power steering, No defrost or A/C. What ever your belt drives will not turn and will and in turn will not work.

to tell if you have a bad belt or something else making your noise take some water and pour it over the belt as the car is running and if the noise goes away you have a bad belt, if the noise continues it's something else. A new belt will cost around $20 to 25 and then add labor to that if you are not going to put it on yourself.

It should cost less than $50 to get it replaced. If the belt is worn, it will tend to slip, and then break. Other than that, no damage to your vehicle.

wont hurt to change it now..if you dont and it breaks, you can free float your valves, thus damaging your engine...soem belts can cost 60 bucks or so...very easy to replace...if thats not it, you could have a bearing going bad in a pulley, or the alternator or air condition compressor...good luck...changing your belt should be done..wont hurt anything!!!
