a long beard ,means the path has been long,
my beard when i have it reminds me how long this project or that has been going on.
many people not religious also can and do grow beards
it isnt a sign of religious belief but a simple measure
as other respondants have suggestyed it also is a veil replacement that is usually exclusivly male
i have seen bearded woman and facial hair on woman makes a supreem statement ,yet even in primative sociaties they /woman choose to pluck it out
god didnt give adam a raiser ,nor are there any commands according to beards that come to mind ,though beards are a sign for men ,they also are an aspect of our humanness
but to infure a beard means that /or/this is at best a presumption
some times i just dont feel like shaving ,but for me it is no statement with or sans beard
i have noted evil prisoners who face the public wear beards to hide thier face
as soon as the media focus on some one else off comes thier beard and now they are respectable
cleanshaved but a public danger none the less but they
put the bearded ones into linked villany yet perpetrate thier crimes as a clean skin ,with a bearded heart[veiled heart]
did you mean to say fanatics not enthusiasts
sorry i shouldnt presume
nor should people
unsure what you mean by 'so often work' ,work in what way
beards dont work they are present or not
deliberate or incidental
veil or badge
or lable or sign
thats about the long and the short of it.

The first answer was funny :-), however,
I think it may have to do with some direction given in the
Hebrew Scriptures....especially if the enthusiasts are Jewish.
"“‘YOU must not cut YOUR sidelocks short around, and you must not destroy the extremity of your beard." -Leviticus 19:27
What is meant by the command not to “cut [the] sidelocks short around” or “destroy the extremity” of the beard?
This law was evidently given to prevent the Jews from trimming their beards or hair in a way that would imitate certain pagan practices. (Jeremiah 9:25, 26; 25:23; 49:32) However, God’s command did not mean that the Jews could not trim their beards or facial hair at all.—2 Samuel 19:24.

It's a sign of the patriarchy
Generally, men can grow beards, women and children can't. So the more beard you have, the more of a man you are. Kind of like muscles, deep voice, tall stature, etc.
A longer beard is a sign that you're older and so have seniority rights over younger men as well as women and children. that's why prophets and patriarchs of every tradition are often shown with very long beards.

In Islam mean must wear beards because
1) All the Prophets had beards and we seek to emulate them in every way
2) Men must distinguish themselves from women
3) They are part of our natural way of being and are not unhygeinic to keep (unlike nails or body hair which should be shaved)

I think you mean "so often worn by..."
In various religions, men - particularly those who are the leaders or priests - are forbidden to trim or cut their beards.
god bless
