you still eventually have to get them to eliminate outside don't you? I just started potty training my puppy to go outside as soon as I got her.

I have tried that stupid puppy pad thing on a puppy I used to have , and the dog would only go there and not go anywhere else, even outside. I had to retrain him all over again to go outside. The dog I have now was trained right from the start to go outside. NO puppy pads! It was much easier without the stupid pad thing. I will never use them again!

Because if you are gone a long time, the puppy/dog might get desperate to eliminate and start doing it on the carpet/floors. I think we all would rather pick up a pad rather than clean up soiled areas and if they ever soil one area, they can still smell it and often want to go to that same place over and over instead of going outside.

Think about this in terms of your puppy...What would you do if you had to go and didn't have a bathroom available? Eventually an "accident" would happen, right?

I have had a client that has a small dog. She trained it to go on the newspapers in a room set aside just for this. Since she is an elderly lady she isn't able to take it outside much but she still wanted the companionship of a dog since she is all alone. Since the dog is small it isn't much of a problem to clean up after it does its business but I wouldn't recommend this for a larger dog which would need more exercise anyways.

I trained my dog on a pad because he is hairless. I have coats PJ's and many other things (He WILL NOT wear the shoes) but when the weather is below zero he freezes his little butt off. If the weather is nice I take him out regularly so he doesnt use the pads. Same thing with rain, he gets damp and chilled. He doesnt mind the cold and snow (He actually likes it) but I worry mainly about his toes getting frost bitten. He does not like the cold/rain.

I live in a high rise in a huge city. After research, I found puppy pads were the best option,,,I also have a small breed which makes things easier and less messy.

The only way I can understand it is if they live in an apartment. Otherwise I will never understand, mine was trained to go outside from day one!

I've never understood this fad! People too lazy to take their dogs outside have no business having a dog in the first place.

Can't understand people who encourage their dogs to eliminate in the house!. Ugh

Its just a matter of opinion. Some people swear by it and some say dont ever do it. I know my father trained our golden to go on newspaper in the corner for about the first month and he was always great about not going in the house.
