Yes their attendance is down along with many protestant sects, especially in Europe. Another thing about Catholics, and all Christians really, is that they play a numbers game. The first thing into a Mexican Cathedral is the Aztec Eagle possibly representing Tonatiuh, a sun god or some other deity. In all Abrahamic faiths duel citizenship with other religions is not tolerated, but in this case it is. So are Mexicans even Catholic? Who knows.
Monoculturalism, in the form of religion is also its down fall. Look at all the nominally Catholic countries in Europe: France, Spain, Italy, Ireland etc. Most of these people go to church mainly to mark landmarks in their lives like Marriage, Death, Birth etc. They are born into this religion and take it for granted. This holds with the protestants as well.
As for being broke the church has had money problems since the seventies. They were implicated in a money laundering scheme with the mafia. Yet they hold vast resources in land, art, buildings, Universities, endowments etc. So who knows what financial resources they have. I am sure they are pretty silent on this point. Once Billy Graham was confronted with the fact that his Missionary Church was over endowed and he kept silent about it. His response: "if people knew how much money we had they would probably quit giving.
