THE B-I-B-L-E that is the book for me

2006-12-29 10:08:31 · answer #1 · answered by Warren Job 2 · 2 6

Which creation story?

Religions are based on people's understanding of spiriutal matters in a particular time and place and culture. At the time that the Bible was written, thousands of years ago, people in that culture believed the creation stories that were recorded there. Actually there are two creation stories. One, (Gen 1:1 to 2:4), is based on the early written material of the Priestly tradition, which says that God created the world in 7 days, and created men and women at the same time, on the sixth day. The other, based on the common word of mouth wisdom of the people's "J" tradition, (Gen 2:5 ff) says that humans were created before there was any rain or vegetation (created on the 3rd day in the Priestly tradition), and that man was created first, then the animals (when Adam named them all), then woman some time later. So already we see evidence of my premise, that religion changes because it is based on human understanding of spiriutal matters and human understanding changes.

Now we understand far more about scientific and spiritual matters than we did back in Moses' time, when both the P and J traditions were established, and many people recognise that the creation stories are metaphorically true rather than literally true. A famous rabbi, Harold Kushner, the author of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People, http://www.gurus.com/dougdeb/Courses/bestsellers/Kushner/BT-5.htm
discussed the J creation story (the one of Adam and Eve), and commented that this is a metaphorical retelling of when we "became human". Thus, Eve must suffer to bear young because we as humans have very large skulls and upright posture, both of which complicate childbirth. Adam must labor for his bread, agriculture is an early invention of humans and almost unknown to other creatures. We alone among creatures (as far as we know) are aware of our mortality. Etc.

None it is a parable for God's power. It is not necessary to be a literal creationist to be a Christian (or any religon), most mainstream denominational Churches recognize this. Just as Evolution does not necessarily equate with the Big Bang theory (which I wish people would also realize).

The actual creation story of the bible is meant as a parable to show a hidden message of divine power not literal. Both Theist and Atheists need to realize this.

Angieflyn there are many many books that have survived longer then bible and many of them Parables too.

Watcherd Noah's Ark is not an artifact, we don't have Noah's Ark and the Dead Sea Scrolls were from long after Creationism, and speak nothing of it (it amazes me the thing people attempt to put in the Dead Sea Scrolls. They are not some secret insight and hidden people they have been on tour and translated. Read the Dead Sea Scrolls (as they are available translated and available from the Hebrew University) instead of books on the Dead Sea Scrolls)

None. There is no evidence to support it.

Some people say, "Read the Bible!" I, for one, don't listen to a theory that only pops up in one source. If you can't pull information from more than one source, it's not worth consideration. That goes for math, science, or whatever, so why shouldn't it apply to creation? The Bible is one source. There's not another one. It's not worth considering.

Some other people say that the Bible HAS to be true just because it's been around so long. And yet, The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer are both older. Nobody believes that they're true.

All evidence supports the fact that the creation story is false.

The proof and evidence is all around you and everywhere, undeniable proof, and indisputable visible evidence. It is called creation and life. Unless your are blind, deaf, and senseless. You can see, smell, taste, hear, feel, and examine the evidence.

We live on a planet teeming with life. Plant life with approximately 250,000 species, animal life with over a million species. Scientists are learning just how complex life is. So complex that it requires design. The evidence of design requires a designer. Scientists are also learning the conditions for life; just how perfect conditions here on planet Earth are to support all this life.

Sure, right, this all just happened and evolved. This sort of thinking takes considerable faith, exponentially more faith than believing in a creator.

How about the complexity of life? A living cell is so awesomely complex that its interdependent components stagger the imagination and defy evolutionary explanations. A minimal cell contains over 60,000 proteins of 100 different configurations. The chance of this assemblage occurring by chance is 1 in 10 4,478,296 .17

Of course there is evidence that it could be true, and that is the mere fact that there is no evidence against it. Innocent until proven guilty.
Our existence could all be some alien's dream.

Good science, supports the creation story, and vice versa, for starters. If you do an intellectually honest study on it, using good science, and look at the evidence we DO have, then it points to the creation story being true. MANY people hate, and deny this fact, and it is very interesting to see how that transpires. Look at the anthropic constants of the universe, for a good place to start. Those are things, that are fascinating, and NOT in dispute by any scientist. It makes no sense, that evolutionary theory had something to do with it, or the beliefs of atheists, and no god had something to do with it. IT makes a LOT more sense that an intelligent being had something to do with it. It makes more common, logical sense, that a God, that had no beginning and no end, that is intelligent, and outside of time, created it, just the way the bible said he did. People may be more apt to accept it, if it didn't pose such big ramifications in their own lives. They are convinced this God is big mean, and there to take away our fun, but that is furthest from the truth.

Artifacts such as Noah's Ark, the Dead sea scrolls, The pyres and monuments that the Israelites left in their passage through the desert all point to a truth many want you to disbelieve.
