I checked out the local channel availability in various areas around the country. In some areas, all 4 of the major affiliates (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) are available in HD, but in many areas only 1 or 2 are available. In the Portland metro area, only FOX and NBC are available (not even PBS). Is this a licensing/legal issue for DirecTV ? I have a Tivo/DirecTV investment and don't want to switch to Comcast, but I want to maximize my HD programming availability.

If you hook up an antenna, you can use your DirecTV receiver to get your local HD channels terrestrially. HD channels take up a LOT of bandwidth and DirecTV as well as Dish are having a hard time fitting every single HD station in the country on their satellite. They have launched a couple satellites just for HD but until they are up and running the smaller local markets get shafted in the meantime

DirecTV provides a hundred and fifty HD channels, three times as much as cable. do no longer understand approximately Dish yet in my opinion i did no longer like it. It takes too long for the channels to coach once you alter them. additionally DirecTV handles the climate extra constructive. Dish will decrease to rubble with the smallest drizzles.
