It is the "season of giving" after all. What sort of items should I
include? Should I write "Happy Holidays" on the trash bag?!! Can I itemize it and write it off on my taxes?

Thanks for the tip about identity thieves. I make sure to shred all my P.I. This dude rolls a buggy down the street going through each herby curby (that's what they call the trash bins in the City of Atlanta) not the least bit concerned who notices looking for "stuff". I'm guessing it's anything he deems of value.

For my own entertainment I should find a boy mannequin and place it in there and have him cover its eyes, but for good measure throw in a few towels and maybe some soap.

First of all I would make darn sure that they are really homeless people, going through someone's trash is the best way that identity thieves have of getting your personal information.
With that said, I agree with the other posters in saying you should donate to a local homeless shelter, and then that can be written off of your taxes, but only if you have enough to itemize with in the first place.

This sounds a bit cold hearted but put a lock on your garbage bin with a sign with instructions to the nearest church or homeless shelter. Don't give out care packages, you'll find them coming back every day knocking on your door for food (like a stray dog). Donate money to the homeless shelters or churches in your area. Get a receipt and then you can claim that on your taxes as a donation.

Put a sign on your trash with the location of a homeless shelter, then give money to the shelter. People should access community resources to get back on their feet rather than living off of other people's trash.

Do not be sarcastic and cold hearted. You never know what life can bring you in the future. Appreciate what you have and be compassionate. I hope you are not serious. There is a thousand ways to help people anonymously. You do not know their story (why? they end-up homeless) Giving is a 24/7 ordeal, but than again you might be empty and have nothing to share other than your bitterness.

Not all of the people who sift thourhg your garbage are homeless. Some are people just making a living out of recycling. They're call dumptser divers.

Anyway, that would be very nice.

I place my recyclables in a bag next to the trash can and have asked by local "diver" to stay out of my trash. He has.

If you regularly see him making his rounds you might want to prepare some food and give it too him. I give mine meals from time to time. If you are looking for a gift a new sleeping bag, heavy coat, toiletries (sample sizes) would be appreciated.

A gooded hearted jester but the'll be there in force after that. Be better to give to a homeless home or offer your time serving in a soup kichen

Common sense tells me you should prepare a special package for them (not trash or almost wasted food) maybe give them a bag of groceries, a new sweater, a note telling them to knock on your door and you will provide them w/ a warm plate of food.

Leave them some job applications. I guarantee you'll never see those hobos again. Funny how they gripe about their lot in life yet won't make one iota of effort to improve it. Do not enable their slothfulness any longer.

Why is this only the season of giving? People need help year 'round. There is nothing wrong with helping those in need.
