I find it funny when people ask questions like this. The question asked implies a "truth" that cannot be proven (that God doesn't exist). The obvious answer is yes, humans have always needed God. There has never been a time when there was no God in recorded history. Since the beginning of time (or to be exact, the time or written history), humans have wanted to associate with and worship a higher power. Everybody has a god weather they want to admit it or not. Christian's and Jews God is the God of the line of Abraham. Technically, so is Allah (the Muslim God), as Islam is a derivative of Judaism. Even the atheist has a god, it is science. They have faith in the big band and evolution (to which we have no absolute proof of either, they have to take it on faith at some point). They have holes (i.e. the laws of Thermodynamics do not fit in what they believe) in their story, just as many religions do today. So yes, everybody needs a god, be it an actually Deity, a way of life, a practice, money, etc.

Man didn't necessarily need him, but man's rulers did. There's an innate reluctance to be subservient to another man, so the ruling class would fabricate a god whose needs happened to coincide with their own agenda. That truth has been repeating itself throughout history right up to the present with Bush claiming to have an inside track on god's wishes and adjusting military policy accordingly.

Why? To help people understand things they cannot. It is much easier to just say "God did it."
Also it would be good for personal power. You tell people there is a god, convince them and then tell them that only through you can they be with god after death.
To others its like an emotional crutch... like if something tragic happens like a death, people will try to ease the pain by saying "X is with god now" or "it was part of god's big plan".
And again also... with god comes religion and through religion power and through power... control

Man invented God to keep him company through the lonely, cosmic night.
The human ego dictates that we NEED God. God made man in His own image, right? We WORSHIP God - a carbon copy of OURSELVES! We want to WORSHIP ourselves. Very Freudian stuff!

The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first time a species achieves sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods.

God could come down and destroy man, and man's manmade god, and everything else, so the question is, why doesn’t he?
