First, I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. Yes, bipolar disorder is considered a potentially fatal disease because of the high percentage of those afflicted who commit suicide. It can also run in families, so it's highly likely that your sister has it as well, especially judging from how you describe her behavior.

If she's an RN and says doctors are quacks, she's in some serious denial. But she definitely needs help. If you can't reason with her (would she allow a patient she's caring for to think doctors are quacks and not get the help they needed?), you may have to intervene more forcefully. Please talk to a mental health professional. They can help you decide the best course of action to help your sister. She may get angry, she may say horrible things, she may not speak to you for a while, but just keep telling yourself that you're saving her life, whether it's keeping her from committing suicide, or from ruining herself financially.

In addition, if she's not on meds and not getting counseling, she may not be making the best decisions at work, and as an RN caring for patients...something really bad could happen and she could get into a lot of trouble. Please seek professional help soon. Wishing you the best.

Yes people with disorders on the bipolar spectrum do have higher rates of suicide. It can be a very difficult illness to live with, particularly if untreated or badly treated. Death can really seem a better and reasonable option. As well, a huge difficulty with medicating someone with the illness is that antidepressants actually increase, during the first few months the patient takes them, suicide risk. Pharmacists are usually careful to explain this to the person getting the drug but often the family doesn't know.

I strongly recommend you read a book called THESE PAINTED WINGS by Autumn Stringham. You can find it at www.thesepaintedwings.com It is written by someone who had a family member with bipolar illness commit suicide. She later finds out she has the illness as well....and she finds something that works for her so she won't have to die like her Mom did. The book may help you understand what your brother went through, what your sister is going through, and what you can/can't do to support them. I'll put a link to it under 'source' for you.

I wish you the best.

People who are bipolar can commit suicide and it sounds as if your sister may need some help too. Daniel Steele has a child who commited suicide while he was suffering from bi-polar disorder. She wrote a book about the journey that her family and her son went through it is called "HIS BRIGHT LIGHT." The book really helped me to better understand the human side of the disease not just the medical side. In the meantime I will be keeping you and your family in my prayers.

she will not like you for a while maybe but if you want to save your sister's life, have the police do a 10/13 which is commitied to mental health facitity against there wishes. but if she is thinking suicide all the time. time is short because she will do. please if nothing else works have her commited and they will help her and help to keep her from suicide.

you dont want to hear this but if a person is really determined to commite suicide nobody can stop them, they can delay but not stop someone so determined. i know from loosing a lover.
