As a guy, I first want to say that I do not contribute to the 99.9% of guys who do what you have just said. It's a little bit of a confidence issue and a little bit primate instinct. Guys want to hide their shortcomings by showing off what they have to show off and they want other guys to see that he's after this girl so keep away. Which only causes other guys to do the same thing. It's the 21st century version of pounding of the chest & howling.
I remember how things got started with a girl I was with for quite some time. Every guy in the place was after her. Married, single, it didn't matter. I just happened to get the timing right and we both left at the same time. I gave her a little smile and opened the door for her. After all night of having guys show off their tattooes, muscles, how much they can drink, and other crap like that, my sweet yet simple self was the one who got to walk her to her car. And that was it to by the way. All I got out of it was a phone number. Everyone else was after far more and came up with nothing.
All in all, guys are dumb. And I accept my dumbness.
