I am an empath. I am also often depressed, but I do not relate the 2 since I am able (for the most part) to control what I receive. My depression stems from having an inherited disorder called Marfan's Syndrome. But I suppose that if you can't "shut off" the empathic impulses that depression could be a side effect, not necessarily a symptom. Depression (in my case) is a side effect of my having multiple surgeries.

I took psychology last year and I learned that if you're depressed it usually doesn't come about because you're overly sensitive. It comes about because your bodies hormones aren't acting the way they should. There's something going on and your body doesn't know what to do about it, so it's making you all depressed. And just because you read something that sounds like all the same symptoms that you actually have doesn't mean that it's what you think it is. I'm not trying to be rude by any means. So yeah, I'd go to the doctor and tell them what's going on. And if they try and prescribe you anything, I wouldn't just jump at it. Do some research on the medications. And if you're taking medications for any reason at the moment, do research on those too. Some medications are a big reason why so many people like yourself get depressed. It's because of medications. So I hope some of this helped you out. If not, I'm truly sorry.

I dont believe that being a sensitive person makes you more susceptible to depression. As I understand it (from my doctors) depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, which medication MAY help to restore. Check with your doctor, and read up on medications so that you have some knowledge before you take them. Ask LOTS of questions and, remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to your health and medications. Maybe join an online support group for people who suffer with depression. You would be likely to get lots of honest answers and helpful hints from those who have been down a similar road. Best wishes!

I agree with you; Antidepressant medication use has gone up 2,000% in the last 20 years. That's mind boggling.

We've become a very soft society. We can't handle adversity. With the 90's being so lucrative for many, parents nowadays spoil their kids rotten and do everything for them. Kids now have appointment books. It's ridiculous.

They pave the way for many people, and they never learn how to handle adversity.

Also, people are very self absorbed. We always look at ourselves first when we dont' realize that there is always someone else who is worse off than us.

We also dont' talk. Drugs are given out like candy, but few people talk to freinds, family, or others about their problems. Also, people dont' look within on how to fix their depression. The way you take things, is a big thing too. I have one freind that is so sensitive that she gets sad at the smallest thing; looking for something to be depressed about; that's not a chemical imbalance; that's an attitude;

We finally confronted her, wait for her to freak out and have an anxiety attack (I'm not kidding) and eventually she realized what was up and we were'nt going to stand for walking on egg shells all of the time. She now is a joy to be around and not high maintenance, and amazingly drug free without any antidepressants. She says her life is much happier and I'm glad for her.

NO DEPPRESSION IS NOT JUST FOR SENSITIVE PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO TRY TO BE TOUGH AND HARD HEARTED AND RICH PEOPLE WHO HAVE IT ALL ARE MORE DEPRESSED. MOST PEOPLE DONT BELIEVE THIS BUT I HAVE SEEN IT FIRST HAND. YOU CAN HELP YOUR SELF IF YOU WANT TO, I HAVE DONE IT. YOU DONT NEED A DOCTOR TO TELL YOU A REAL FRIEND THAT CARES CAN HELP YOU BETTER . IF YOU HAVE A TRUE FRIEND. THEY ARE HARD TO COME BY. WISH YOU LOTS OF LUCK. BETTTY
