What kind of vet doesn't have the answer to crusty ear tips? You may want to try a different vet hospital.

You should only use pet ear cleaners available from you vet or pet store, or you can use rubbing alcohol. The ear cleaning solutions are better because they dry quickly and contain agents that break up the ear wax, but alcohol works in a pinch. You should not use peroxide or any soaps, they do not dry fast enough. A moist ear will become an infected ear pretty quickly.

Crusty ear tips could be a type of skin mite, but a "real" vet will have to diagnose and prescribe medication if that is what it is.

If your dogs ears get dirty very quickly he might have ear mites! If so he will scratch at them and your they will have a strong oder. they have ear mite meds at most any pet store and vet offices. Use Cotton balls with warm water or alcohol to clean the ears DO NOT use Q-tips they can harm delicate parts of the ear. If your vet doesn't know how to clean your dogs ears you need to find anther vet!!

Well, care the ears of your dog as their would be yours. With the plastic stics that have cotton on it. I hope you know what I mean. But clean them very carefully and don't go to deep. You can clean them every two weeks or when you see, that he is scratching his ears to often as usuall. I hope you understand my answer.

Then call another vet, your vet doesn't sound like he is very bright. Sorry that is just how I feel.
