Where do you want to live after you graduate? Go to a school in that state. It is MUCH easier to get a job by building contacts in-state while you are still in school.

Beyond that, meet the band directors (both marching and concert if there are more than one at those schools) and professors for you major instrument. See if your ideas of music education and the learning process will work with theirs (and if you will work well with them). You will be spending most of your time with these people - (and they will eventually be writing your recommendations for either grad school or a JOB) make sure you will WANT to spend time with them!

I have found out the hard way how difficult it is to find employment (at least in the public school system) when you get your certification in a state other than the one where you live...and I've moved once again. It is MUCH easier to get your certification in the state where you plan to live!!

An aside: what kind of music is your favorite - marching? symphonic? jazz? UT is well-known for its marching band, and UNT has one of the nation's best jazz programs. I've had friends graduation from both schools; my college roommate chose UT over UK (which was her father's college).

Well, I don't know much but I do know of a lot of university professors originally from Texas that studied there. I would ask around, your teachers will know good schools. I would also see if you can talk to some music graduates from both schools. Either way, unless you want to be a top university professor, if you work and practice hard you should be fine in almost any school.

The University of Iowa in Ames has an excellent music program, but both of the other universities you mention have good programs also.

You should at least consider UNT. Of course, I'm biased since I teach here (and went to school here). If you check national rankings you will find we are near the top. Our wind studies program is excellent by all accounts.

The Julliard is the best, I've heard. Berklee College of Music is good too (and yes it's spelled "Berklee" and I'm not talking about UC Berkeley.)

the place i'm from public training isn't terrific so in case you like a good training you ought to take care of a private one. yet this relatively relies upon, some public colleges are terrific and a few are very undesirable, merely as some inner maximum colleges are terrific and others very undesirable.
